동서고금을 막론하고, 도검(刀劒)은 사람들에게 있어서 무력(武力)을 상징하는 기물로 인식되어져 왔다. 살상무기(殺傷武器)라는 일차적인 성격을 지닌 개인용 단병기(短兵器)인 도검은, 그 무기를 소지함으로써 사용자가 적에 대한 생사여탈권(生死與奪權)을 행사할 수 있는 무력의 권위(權威)를 지니게끔 한다. 이러한 도검을 선물로 주는 행위는, 선물을 받는 자에게 외적(外敵)과 악인(惡人)을 척살하는 무력의 권위를 부여함을 뜻하거나, 선물받는 자를 요괴(妖怪)나 악수(惡獸) 등의 온갖 사악한 외물(外物)로부터 무력으로 지켜주는 호신의 부적을 증여한다는 의미를 지니게 된다. 외적과 악인을 척살하는 권위를 지닌 도검은, 사대부의 의리정신을 반영하는 의검(義劒)의 형상으로서 문학 속에 존재하게 된다. 그리고, 소유자를 사악한 외물로부터 지켜주는 도검은, 벽사(.邪)의 신물(神物)인 신검(神劒)의 면모를 작품 속에 드러낸다. 이러한 두 유형을 동시에 지니는 도검이 소유자에게 증여된 이후에는, 군자(君子)의 수신기물(修身器物)인 수양검(修養劒)의 의미를 지니게 되기도 한다. 이러한 의검과 신검, 수양검의 의상(意象)은 조선시대의 도검문화를 이해하는데 있어서 중요한 근저가 되고, 그 중도검선물의 유형을 분석하는데 있어서도 큰 도움이 된다. 본고에서는 이를 바탕으로 하여, 조선후기 도검증여의 다양한 유형에 대해 분석하였다. ‘국내의 도검증여’에서는 친족간의 도검증여와 무관이 받은 도검선물에 관해 설명하였고, ‘국제적 도검교류’에서는 조선인과 외국인 간 친교의 징표로서의 도검선물과 조선과 중국간 외교의 예물로서의 도검증여에 대해 논하였다. 상기 사례들에 관한 이러한 연구는, 조선의 도검문화와 도검문학에 대한 이해도를 증대시켜주는 데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

Across the all ages and the nations of the world, a sword has been known as a recognition and symbol of authority. A sword is personal basic weapon for killing the enemy. By having sword, a person has the authority to choose the enemy’s life and death. Giving a sword as gift means one who receive it, that person can gain great authority to fight foreign enemies and evil ones. They also believed sword has similar effect as an amulet that can protect person from monsters and evil creatures. In the Korean Sword literature, A sword of the used for demolish foreign enemies and evil ones are known as an UiGeom(義劒：Sword of justice). And an amulet sword which protects owner from monsters and evil creatures are known as an ShinGeom(神劒：Amulet Sword to avert evils). A sword as a gift contains these two aspects and after they are given to the new owner, it becomes a SuyangGeom(修養劒：Swords to improve spiritual culture). These three images of Korean sword；UiGeom, ShinGeom, and SuyangGeom helps to understand Korean sword culture and to analyze gift swords by types. This paper analyzed a gift of swords in Korea by types. ‘Domestic sword gift’ shows a sword gift between relatives or a military officer. ‘Global sword gift’ indicates a friendship and an official presents between Korea and China. These helps to understand a Korean sword culture and a Korean Sword literature.
