본 논문은 현재 대학에서 활발하게 진행되고 있는 독서 교육의 특징 및 전망을 고찰한 것이다. 대학에서 독서는 개인적인 차원에서뿐만 아니라 국가적인 차원에서 중요한 활동이다. 대학에서 독서 활동은 사회적 자아를 신장시키기 위해서 중요하며, 지적인 성찰을 통하여 사회 문제를 적극적으로 인식하고 사회 변화의 주체가 되기 위한 활동으로써 중요하다. 그런데 최근 한국 대학생들의 독서 실태를 보면, 독서를 기피하거나 흥미 위주의 독서에 치우친 경향이 강하다. 그리하여 대학생들의 문제 해결 능력이 부족하다는 문제점을 낳고있다. 더욱이 21세기는 정보 기술의 발달에 따라 다양한 정보가 폭발적으로 제공되는 사회로, 이 사회를 이끌어가는 대학생들에게는 정보를 취사선택할 수 있는 안목과 새로운 정보를 만들 수 있는 창의적인 능력이 요구된다. 즉, 문제를 다각적이고도 종합적으로 바라볼 수 있는 안목이 대학생들에게 필요하다. 이러한 안목은 개별 전공의 사유 방식을 넘어서서 보편적이고 종합적인 사유 방식을 통해서 형성될 수 있다. 많은 대학에서 교양 학부를 개설하여 기초 교양 교육의 일환으로 독서 교육이 강조되면서 학제적으로 이루어지고 있는 것도 이러한 사회적 요구에 부응하는 것이다. 현재 대학에서 진행되고 있는 학제적 독서 교육은 기존의 국문과 중심의 독서 교육에서 벗어나 다양한 전공의 교수가 공동으로 교양 필수 과목으로 진행하고 있는데, 철학과 교수들의 진입으로‘비판적 사고’중심의 독서 교육이 강조되고 있다. 비판적 사고중심의 독서 교육은 문제를 정확하게 분석하고 비판적으로 접근할 수 있는 논리적 사고를 배양하는 데에는 긍정적인 효과를 지닌다. 그러나 학생들에게 독서에 대한 욕구를 불러일으키기에는 많은 어려움이 따른다. 비판적 사고 중심의 독서 활동은 자유롭고 창의적인 독서 활동으로 나아가지 못하고 있다. 비판적 사고가 복잡한 현실에 대한 명확하고 올바른 판단을 형성하는 데에 도움이 된다고 하더라도 독서에 대한 거부가 강한 대학생들의 독서 기피 상황을 극복하는 데에는 한계가 있다. 그 뿐만 아니라 감성적인 부분을 통해 세상에 대한 이해를 넓히고 다른 사람과 공감하는 능력을 신장시키기에도 한계가 있다. 이제 학제적 구성을 넘어서는 통합적 독서 교육으로 나아가야 한다. 그것은 특정 전공의 영역을 넘어서는 기초 교양 교육을 다시 정립하는 제3의 교육 영역의 개발이다. 그러기 위해서는 초등?중등 교육에서 이루어지고 있는 독서 교육과도 의사소통하여 고등 독서 교육의 방향을 정립할 필요가 있다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of the interdisciplinary approach of reading and to suggest new goal of reading in liberal education. Recently the interdisciplinary approach of reading is regarded as a new, developing, and appropriate teaching method in liberal education. It is necessary to cope with the complicated and various problems in the information society. The professors consist doctors of diverse department. This is effective to teach the freshman who has to solve the social problems creatively. But there are some problems with focusing on critical thinking as the goal of the interdisciplinary approach of reading, which the philosophy doctors are emphasizing the point of. It is not easy for freshman to read difficult books for developing of critical thinking. To read for critical thinking makes student`s feel difficult. It is hard for them to read the classic books, and also they can`t enjoy reading books in their classes. Also it is not easy for students to develop creative and flexible thinking through learning of reading for critical thinking, which is more inclined toward logical than creative thinking. The reading education has to arouse student`s interest in reading books, because Korean university students don`t read even once a good books. Most importantly, it is necessary for freshman to be interested in and enjoy reading books which are regarded as academic classics. So the new interdisciplinary approach of reading is beyond the developing of critical thinking. It should be the creative and liberal reading. That is not only logical but also various thinking. For that, it is necessary to communicate the diverse interdisciplinary approach. Also the liberal education professors have to communicate the primary education and secondary education teachers. The reading education has to go forward developing university students who will become the world citizen beyond the local interest. This is the liberal education suited to the new century.
