이 글은 미국 남 장로교 선교부 파송 간호사로 구한말에 광주, 군산, 전주 그리고서울 등지에서 활동했던 서서평(Elisabeth J. Shepping, R.N. 1880-1934)의 의료 선교사업을 조직사회학의 관점에서 조명하여 그 사회적 의의를 규명하는 데 목적이 있다. 서서평은 일제강점기인 1912년 3월부터 1934년 6월 서거하기까지 22년 동안선교활동을 했다. 그녀는 서구의 간호직을 한국 사회에 도입하여 새롭고 존경받는신시대 여성을 위한 전문 직업으로 정착시키는 데 결정적인 역할을 했던 것으로평가받고 있다. 서구의 간호사직이 한국 사회에서 근대적인 새로운 제도로 수용정착되기 위해서는 조선왕조에서 비슷한 기능을 수행했던 “의녀 제도”를 둘러싼전통주의를 극복하는 일이 선행되어야만 했다. 조선 후기에 의녀 제도는 사회적인기능상 절대적인 필요성이 있었음에도 불구하고 여전히 천민계층의 일로 여겨져상류층 사람들이 꺼리고 있었다. 새로운 간호사제도가 한국 사회에 성공적으로 정착되기 위해서는 기존의 의녀제도가 가지고 있는 전통과의 단절을 감행할 수 있는훨씬 더 강력한 동기체계를 사람들에게 심어줄 필요가 있었다. 서서평은 자신이 믿는 예수 그리스도에 대한 전적인 헌신행위를 통해서, 곧의료 선교활동을 통해서 당시 사람들 속에 간호사업의 사회적 필요성을 훨씬 능가하는 강력한 동기체계를 심어주는 데 성공을 거두었다. 여기에서 간호사직은하느님께 직접 헌신하는 소명으로서의 직업이 된다. 이를 통해서 해당 여성들은지금까지의 일종의 노예 신분으로부터 정신 및 종교적으로 해방 되게 된다. 또한,사회적인 견지에서 볼 때, 그것은 그들이 근대화된 한국 사회의 떳떳한 구성원으로 존경과 명예를 누림과 아울러 경제력을 갖게 됨으로써 사회·경제적으로도 진정한 해방을 맛보게 되었다는 사실을 의미한다.
This article is about to examine the social meaning of Elisabeth J. Shepping``s medical mission work in Kwangju, Kunsan, Jeonju and Seoul inKorea. Ms. Shepping, as a missionary sent by Southern Presbyterian Church ofAmerica, carried out her mission work in Korea for 22 years from March 1912 toher death on June 1934. She is regarded to play a crucial role in introducing theadvanced Western nursery work as a woman``s professional work into Korea. Inorder to do this, she had to overcome the resistance of the traditional Koreannursery system of Chosun dynasty which had been playing the similar role inKorean society. Though the traditional Korean nursery work of Chosun dynastyhas played an important role in Korean society, the work itself has been regardednegatively as a lower class`` work. Therefore, in order to introduce a new nurserysystem in Korean society, a far stronger motivation was needed to remove thenegative feeling of the traditional nursery work. Ms. Shepping could introducethe Western nursery work successfully by her wholistic dedication to Christ, thatis, by her altruistic nursing work. In other words, Ms. Shepping turned nursingwork from a secular, lower class`` work to a noble vocation, a calling from God. Through the nursing work, the nurses at that time could have experienced aspiritual and religious liberation from the quasi-slave status of an ordinarywoman. From the sociological perspective, this means that the nurse could enjoythe respect and honor as a proud membership of the modernized Koreansociety with a certain high level of wealth. That is, the woman nurse couldexperience a true socio-economic liberation at that time.
