본 논문은 사이렌 신화가 고대로부터 시공을 초월하여 지속적으로 언급되어 온주제라는 점에 초점을 맞추어, 이 주제를 둘러싼 다양한 분야의 문헌과 서술들을 살펴봄으로써 그 문화적 의미와 상징성을 규명하고 있다. 이와 함께 사이렌 신화가 시각적 이미지, 문학과 음악 예술의 작품으로 체현된 사례들을 살펴보았다. 사이렌은 물의 판타지에서 기원한 이래 신화, 종교, 예술, 사회학, 심리학, 정신분석학 등 다방면에 걸쳐 그 의미와 상징성이 추구되어 왔고, 감각 세계와 초월성 모두와 연관되어 있다. 사이렌의 노래는 에토스적인 관점에서 본다면 음악의 초월적인 힘을 부정적인 측면에서 제시하는 경향이 있다. 즉 들음에서 쾌락과 갈망이 자극되고 결국 그 댓가로 죽음과 파멸에 이르게 되는 것이다. 이 점에 있어 사이렌 신화는 음악 예술에서의 주된 신화적 소재인 오르페우스와 대조를 보이나, 음악의 감각적 위력과 초월성을 비등하게 제시한다는 점에서 예술가들은 이를 창조의 소재로 활용해 왔다.

This thesis considers the cultural significance and symbolism of the Siren mythology by looking into various sources and narratives, based on the fact that this mythological subject has been continually discussed beyond time and space. It also exemplifies the relating visual images, and literary and musical works that capture the mythology. Siren originated from the watery fantasy and its cultural significance and symbolism has been pursued in various fields such as mythology, religion, arts, sociology, psychology, and psychoanalysis. It has been discussed in relation to both sensory world and transcendence. From the perspective of the ethos, Siren’s song tends to present the power of music in a negative way. In other words, hearing stimulates pleasure and longing, and ultimately costs destruction or death. In this regard, Siren contrasts with Orpheus, the major mythological character in musical art. However, artists have employed the Siren mythology as artistic inspiration, in that it equally projects sensory and transcendental power of music as in the Orpheus mythology.
