This paper will expound the Confucian philosophy of education. Instruction in Confucianism is essentially a kind of values education. It fosters virtues of diligence, industry, thrift, honesty, cooperation, loyalty and righteousness. Those are invaluable for the success of social, economical and educational activities. Today Confucian countries such as Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and China have been the most rapidly growing areas economically. This is much due to the work ethic of Confucianism. Education, for Confucius and Mencius, is not just the transmission of technology or skill for living. It is to acknowledge the value of human beings and the high quality of human life. Although Confucianism had been practiced feudalistically in the past, its philosophy of education provides a fine basis, reason, method and goal of education. Its teaching of “good human nature,” “equal education,” “equal possibility of becoming a sage,” and “happy in loving knowledge” embraces the universal values of human dignity, democracy and happiness. Like Socratic philosophy and Christianity, Confucian education can give a hope for the change of the individuals and the betterment of the world for the modern and post-modern societies.
