이글은 최근 대두되고 있는 음식윤리와 산업형 농업의 문제를 다룬다. 이를 위해 첫째, 음식윤리의 기원과 특징을 살펴본다. 둘째, 현대 식량체계의 근간이 되는 산업형 농업을 개괄할 것이다. 그래서 산업형 농업체계가 어떻게 음식의 생산, 유통, 소비과정에서 작동되는지를 살펴볼 것이다. 셋째, 경제적 효율성을 추구하는 산업형 농업이 갖고 있는 문제점을 생태적 측면, 동물복지적 측면, 인간사회적 측면으로 나누어 분석할 것이다. 넷째, 산업형 농업에 대한 대안으로 제기되는 유기농업의 가능성과 한계를 살펴볼 것이다. 이를 통해 음식문제와 관련해 우리가 추구해야 할 방향은 무엇인지 모색할 것이다. 음식문제는 식량주권과 같은 정치적 문제, 세계화와 자유무역 같은 경제학적인 문제와 연결되어 있다. 또 음식 문제에는 다양한 가치들이 개입되어 있다. 효율성, 동물복지, 지속가능성, 인간의 건강, 사회적 연대성 같은 가치들이 함축되어 있어서 이들 가치들에 대한 해명 없이는 제대로 된 접근이 불가능하다. 이런 점에서 합리성을 넘어 합당성 차원의 고려가 필요하다. 즉 효율성을 추구하는 시장과 신자유주의, 포디즘에 대한 제어가 요구된다.

This article will deal with the issues of food ethics and industrial agriculture which have recently emerged. Firstly, we examine the origin and characteristics of food ethics. Secondly, we will outline the industrial agriculture which is the background of the modern food system. We will explain how the industrial agriculture system works at the level of production, distribution and consumption. Thirdly, we will analyze the problem of the industrial agriculture which aims at economic efficiency, in the viewpoint of ecological sustainability, animal welfare, and human social affairs. Fourthly, we will examine the possibilities and limitations of organic farming which seems to be the alternative of industrial agriculture. We will explore how we should copy with the food problem. Food issues are connected with the political subject such as food sovereignty, and the economic subject such as globalization and free trade. Also a variety of values including efficiency, sustainability, animal welfare, human health, social solidarity, are involved in food issues. The approach would be not proper unless it does not deal with the various values. In this regard, it is necessary to consider the reasonable beyond the rational. We should control market, neo-liberalism, and fordism by means of the reasonable.
