Kim, Jae-Min. 1999. Thematic Relationship in Small Clauses. Linguistics 7-2, 61-76. The propose of this paper is to discuss the internal structure of small clauses, based on the thematic relationship. I here reject Contreas`(1995) [+V] [-V] classification, which is solely based on the grammatical category of the predicate of the small clauses, and Bowers` (1992) PrP analysis, which is useful only for complement small clauses. Following Uniform Theta Assignment Hypothesis(UTAH), X` theory, and VP-shell structure, I argue that there are two different kinds of small clauses; one is that which allows the verb-raising in the light verb structure, the other one is that which has the [-raising] feature that prevents the empty verb from raising.
