연쇄살인은 그 범죄의 동기에 따라 성적 욕구, 지배욕구 등 비가시적인 이득을 추구하기 위한 연쇄살인은 쾌락형과, 금품강취등 가시적인 이득을 추구하기 위한 것을 이득추구형, 그리고 일반 살인의 반복형태인 분노형으로 유형화할 수 있다. 또한 쾌락형 연쇄살인은 추구하려는 주된 욕망에 따라서 ‘스릴추구형’, ‘욕정추구형’, ‘권력추구형’ 등으로 세분화가 가능하며, 이득추구형연쇄살인은 ‘강도살인형’과 ‘범행은폐형’ 등으로 세분화할 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 이들 욕망이 복합적으로 드러나는 ‘복합형’도존재하였다. 이들 연쇄살인 범죄자들은 범죄자들이 추구하고자하는 명확한 동기, 즉 구체적인 욕구가 있다는 점과 이 욕구를 충족시키기 위한 최선의 방법으로 상대적으로 제압하기 쉬운 약자들(노인, 부녀자, 청소년, 어린이 등)을 피해자로 선택하고, 자신의 범행을 저지르기에 용이한 시간과 공간을 선택하여 범행을 저지른다는 공통점을 가지고 있었다. 연쇄살인 범죄자들은 이상과 같은 공통점과 함께 유형별로 몇가지 특성을 나타내기도 한다. 쾌락추구형 연쇄살인 범죄자들은 성장기에 정서적인 안정감을 제공해 주는 애착관계를 형성하지 못한 것이 정서적 열등감의 형태로 드러나고 있었으며, 이득추구형 연쇄살인 범죄자들은 경제적 어려움 등의 문제상황이 닥쳤을 때 이를 극복하도록 도와주는 지지체계를 가지고 있지 못하는 경우가 대부분이었다.
