본 논문에서는 인터넷 상에서 멀티미디어 메일을 주고받을 수 있게 하는 멀티미디어 메일 시스템을 구현하였다. 이 메일 시스템은 기존의 텍스트 위주의 e-mail 시스템을 확장한 것으로 텍스트, 이미지, MPEG 비디오 및 바이너리 데이터의 전송을 가능하게 한다. 멀티미디어 데이터를 표현하기 위하여 기존의 RFC-822 포맷을 확장한 MIME(Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension) 포맷을 사용하고 메일 호스트 간의 전송을 위하여는 기존의 SMTP(Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)를 그대로 사용한다. 한편, 메일박스 검색 프로토콜로는 현재 널리 사용되고 있는 POP(Post Office Protocol) 보다 기능이 우수한 IMAP(Internet Mail Access Protocol)을 사용한다. 메일 클라이언트는 PC에 구현하였고 메일 서버는 UNIM 시스템에 구현하였다. 구현한 메일 시스템은 바이너리 파일의 추가 기능을 제공하며, 수신된 멀티미디어 메일을 검색하는 경우 수신 윈도우 내에서 포스트스크립트 뷰어, MPEG 디코더 등의 응용프로그램과의 직접적인 인터페이스 기능을 제공하여 사용자가 다양한 형태의 메일 메시지를 듣고 볼 수 있게 한다.

This paper presents a multimedia mail system which can transmit and receive multimedia mailing messages on Internet. This mail system is an extension of the existing e-mail system for multimedia data including text, image, MPEG video, and binary data. The MIME(Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension) format, which is an extension of RFC-822 mail format, is used to represent multimedia data, and SMTP(Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is utilized as a mail transport protocol. The IMAP(Internet Mail Access Protocol), which provides more functions than the widely used POP(Post Office Protocol), is used as a mailbox retrieval protocol. The mail client is implemented on a multimedia PC while the server is implemented on a UNIX system. In the mail system, a mail sending program allows a user to attach binary file such as Postscript file and MPEG compressed video, while a receiving program provides direct interface to application programs to play back received multimedia mail messages.
