이 논문은 최근 십여 년 동안에 이루어진 아메리카 제국에 관한 논의들을 비판적으로 재구성하고 그 의미를 이론적으로 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이미 지난 세기의 말부터 정상화하기 시작한 ‘제국’ 개념은 2001년 미국 본토에서 일어난 테러 공격과 그에 뒤이어 미국이 테러에 맞선 전쟁을 개시하면서 더 적극적으로 인식되었으며, 미국의 제국적 지위와 역할에 관한 다양한 논의들로 이어졌다. 미국의 제국적 지위와 역할에 관한 논의들의 비판적 재구성을 통해 우리는 현재의 세계가 다양한 수준에서의 제국적 욕망과 반제국적 욕망이 충돌하는 이중적 제국의 상태이며, 그 욕망의 실현에 대한 희망, 좌절에 대한 공포가 ‘제국’이라는 개념을 통해 일종의 유토피아와 디스토피아로서 표현되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 지구제국과 미제국이 서로 경합하는 이중적 제국의 현실은 우리의 정치적 삶이 이루어질 새로운 정치적 공간의 현재 모습이다.

This essay is reconsidering the discourse on American Empire during the last decade. The term ‘(American) Empire’ has been normalized and now are being used even in positive sense. Many theories and perspectives were suggested about the status and the role of American Empire, especially after the terror attack on the mainland of the U. S. A. 2001 and the ‘War against Terror’ following thereafter. From the critical reconstruction and reassessment of these discourses we can conclude that today`s world order is in ``double imperial moment`` in which imperial desires (of America and of Global Empire) and anti-imperial desires (of the other nations and of multitude) conflict with each other in various levels, and that hope of fulfilling that desires and fear of failing of it are expressed with the term ‘Empire’ as an utopia or a dystopia. In this double imperial condition we should live our political life.
