침미다례가 나오는 『일본서기』신공기의 기사에 대한 해석은 연구자들간의 견해 차이가 적지 않다. 일부 연구자들은 이 기사를 믿을 수 없는 허구의 것으로 보는 반면에 다른 연구자들은 이를 근거로 과거 역사를 해석하기도 하고, 또 신공기에 나오는 백제의 침미다례 병합을 과거에는 근초고왕대인 369년의 사건으로 보았으나 최근에는 5세기 중엽에서 6세기 전반으로 보는 경향도 있다. 필자는 전남 서부지역에서의 고분들이 당시의 문화양상을 잘 대변하다는 전제하에 침미다례에 대한 다양한 해석에 따라 그 위치를 비정해 보았다. 먼저 신공기의 기사를 369년의 것으로 보고 신미제국과 관련된다고 본다면 그 위치는 영산강유역의 옹관고분 축조세력이 자리잡았던 나주지역일 것이다. 다만 이 기사를 당시 백제가 해상교류를 확보하기 위한 것으로 해석한다면 그 위치는 해남지역이 유력하다. 많은 연구자들이 비정하고 있는 강진지역에서는 당시의 고고학 자료가 확인되지 않고 있다. 그리고 이 기사를 5세기 중엽경의 것으로 본다면 영산강유역과 관련이 있으면서 새로운 문화가 유입되었던 해남지역에 침미다례가 위치하였을 것이다. 반면 침미와 다례로 분리해 본다면 해남과 고흥지역에 위치하였다고 볼 수 있다. 또 이 기사를 5세기 후반의 것으로 본다면 그 위치는 광주지역으로 추정된다. 왜냐하면 당시 동성왕은 무진주(광주)로 친정하였고, 무진주에는 반백제적인 비교적 큰 세력이 있었기 때문이다. 앞으로 침미다례의 위치 문제는 백제의 전남지역 진출시기나 지배방식 등과 함께 더 연구되어야 할 과제이다.

There are considerable controversy among scholars in the interpretation of the article regarding Chimmidarae in the book of "Nihon-shoki" Singong-gi. Some scholars see it as a falsehood while others explain the past based on this article. The unification of Chimmidarae by Baekje was thought to take place in the year 369 in the reign of king Geunchogo; but, recently some argue that it happened in the mid 5th century to early 6th century. As the mounded tombs greatly reflect and represent ancient cultures, I have considered the multiple theories to find the location of the Chimmidarae. Assuming that the article in Singong-gi was happened in the year 369 and Chimmidarae was related with Sinmi-jegug, its location would be Naju where people of the Jar coffin tombs resided. However, if we interpret the article as a guarantee of sea routes for advancing to the south coast, its location would be Haenam. Another location, Gangjin, where many scholars see it as a possible location did not yield any archaeological evidence, yet. If the event of the article was happened in the mid 5th century, Chimmidarae would be Haenam where Yeoungsan river basin was related to and new culture was inflowed. But, if Chimmi and Darae was in reference to two different regional powers, they would be Hannam and Goheung. Another interpretation is that the event of the article was happened in the late 5th century. Then its location would be Gwangju as king Dongseong conquered Mujinju (Gwangju``s old name) which brought on a strong anti-Baekje power. The location of Chimmidarae have to be studied along with other questions such as when the unification of Jeonnam region by Baekje took place and what was the ruling system in this region.
