아리스토텔레스의 목적론적 세계관이 해체되기 시작할 때, 토마스 홉스(리바이어던)와 존 로크(정부에 관한 두 개의 논문)로부터 장 자크 루소(사회계약론) 등의 사상가들은 사회계약을 통해서 사회의 기본구조를 만드는 사고실험을 시도하였다. 홉스(1588-1679)가 ‘리바이어던’을 출간한 1651년부터 루소(1712-1778)의 ‘사회계약론’이 출간된 1762년에 이르는 한 세기는 ‘사회계약론의 위대한 시대’였다. 사회계약론자인 홉스, 로크, 루소의 이론은 자연상태론, 사회계약론, 국가론(통치론) 등에서 각각 다르다. 자연상태의 내용에 대한 차이는 사회계약의 내용에서도 차이를 낳게 되고, 이는 사회계약에 의해 설립된 국가와 정치권력에 대한 설명도 다르게 한다. 하지만 (존 롤스의 정의론에 의해 최근 부활하기는 했지만) 다음의 2가지 결정적인 이유 때문에 사회계약론의 전성기는 그리 오래 가지 못했다. 사회계약은 한번도 체결된 적이 없었으며, 실제로 성사된 사회계약이 없다면 시민들도 정부도 약속에 의해 구속받지 않는다는 이유이다. 그럼에도 사회계약을 통해서 사회의 기본구조를 만들려고 한 시도는 역사적으로 대단한 의의를 갖는다고 평가할 수 있다. 왜냐하면 사회계약론은 주어진 자연법 질서나 신의 질서에 따라 인간 사회질서를 확립하려는 시도에 반대하고, 사회계약을 통해 새롭게 사회질서를 만들어 보려고 한 시도이기 때문이다. 사회계약론을 통해 홉스와 로크와 루소는 개인이나 인간사회가 더 이상 자연이나 신에 의해 운명지워진 존재가 아님을 밝힌 것이다.

When the teleological view of the world of Aristoteles began to disintegrate, many thinkers tried thought experiment with the social contract theory. Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseu are three great philosophers of social contract theory. In their theories we can find the difference of theory construction. The theoretical difference of the nature condition leads to the theoretical difference of the social contract. This explains why their explanations of state and political power are so different. But the heyday of social contract theory is over. There are two main reasons. We never make a social contract once. If we don`t have a social contract, we are not bound by a social contract. The government is also not bound by a social contract. Nevertheless Attempts to establish the basic structure of society have significant meanings. The theory of social contract opposes the attempt to establish the social order along with the nature law or the divine order. With the new theory of social contract Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseu advocate that human being and human society are not preordained by the nature or God.
