본 논문에서는 한용운의 『조선불교유신론』을 비평적 시각에서 살펴보고 그 철학적 의미와 현대적 의의를 고찰하였다. 『조선불교유신론』에서 한용운이 동서양의 종교와 철학에 관한 양계초의 학설에만 의존하여 타종교와 타학파의 철학보다 불교가 우월하다고 주장하는 것은 문제가 있어 보인다. 종교적으로나 철학적으로나 지혜를 기반으로 한 깨달음의 종교로서 불교 자체의 특수성을 부각시켰더라면 불교의 본질을 규명하는데 효과적이었을 것이라는 아쉬움이 남는다. 『조선불교유신론』에서 한용운이 제시한 12가지 승단개혁방안은 비현실적이고 과격한 측면이 있으나 당시 시대상황을 고려하자면 時宜에 맞지 않는 구습을 타파하기 위한 對症下藥의 처방전이었다고 평가할 수 있다. 다만, 승려의 금혼령 폐지를 주장하면서 일반 대중들에게 적용되는 논리를 근거로 제시하거나 승려의 금혼령이 누구나 가지고 있는 식색지욕을 부정하면서 寡慾이 아닌 無慾을 강제하는 것으로 여기는 것은 납득하기 어렵다. 비록 위와 같은 문제가 있을지라도 『조선불교유신론』은 일제강점기에 조선불교의 정신적 독립을 최우선 과제로 삼았던 한용운의 고뇌와 의지가 담겨있는 책으로서 앞으로도 한국불교계의 유신에 指南이 되는 소중한 유산이라는 데에는 異見이 없을 것이다.
The study examined Han Yong-un`s “Joseon Buddhist Reformation” from a critical perspective and looked into its philosophical implications and contemporary significance. Han Yong-un argued, based solely on the Liang Qi-chao`s theory on the western and eastern religions and philosophies, that the Buddhist philosophy is superior to the philosophy of other religions and schools, which seems to be problematic. If he emphasized on the distinctiveness of Buddhism as a religion of awareness, it would have been efficient in identifying essence. Despite the unrealistic and radical aspects of Han Yong-un`s reform plans suggested in “Joseon Buddhist Reformation”, considering the circumstances of the time, it can be viewed as a suitable prescription to put down old practices that weren`t proper in the time, However, from a philosophical view it is difficult to understand his argument that allowing Buddhist monks to marry is beneficial, which is based on the logic applied to the general public, and his understanding that banning their marriage denies all human appetite cud lust and it compels unavariciousness against their will. Nevertheless, there would be no doubt that “Joseon Buddhist Reformation” will be a valuable asset that can be guidance far Korean Buddhist Reformation as a book containing Han Yong-un`s anguish and will, whose priority was spiritual independence of Korean Buddhism during the Japanese colonial period.
