연구에서는 청소년들의 자살생각과 자살시도의 정도를 알아보고, 이들의 자살생각과 시도에 영향을 미치는 요인을 파악해 보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 대구지역 11개 초등학교와 중학교에 재학 중인 청소년 1,185명을 대상으로 한 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 조사대상자의 11.9%(141명)는 자살생각을, 9.1%(108명)는 자살시도를 경험한 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 청소년의 자살생각과 자살시도에 영향을 미치는 요인으로, 개인요인에서는 성별과 자아존중감, 가족요인에서는 가정폭력 피해경험, 학교요인에서는 학업태도와 학교폭력 피해경험이 유의미한 것으로 나타났다. 즉 여학생이, 자아존중감이 낮을수록, 가정폭력 피해경험이 많을수록, 학업태도가 좋지 않을수록, 학교폭력 피해경험이 많을수록 자살생각과 자살시도를 많이 하는 것으로 확인되었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 자살위험이 있는 청소년들을 조기에 발견하여 이들의 자살을 예방하고 대처방안을 마련하기 위한 실천적인 방안을 논의하였다.

The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of the suicide ideation and suicide attempts of adolescents and the influential factors for their suicide ideation and suicide attempt. The subjects in this study were 1,185 adolescents from 11 elementary and middle schools in the region of Daegu Province. The findings of the study were as follows: First, 11.9 percent of the students that numbered 141 had ever thought of suicide, and 9.1 percent that numbered 108 had ever attempted to commit suicide. Second, gender, self-esteem, experiences of suffering from domestic violence, experiences of suffering from school violence and learning attitude were identified as the factors to affect their suicide ideation and suicide attempt. In other words, the female students who were less self-esteemed, who had more experiences of suffering from domestic violence and/or school violence and who took a worse learning attitude had more thoughts of suicide and had made more attempts to commit suicide.
