본 연구는 현재 우리나라 유치원의 물교육 실태가 어떠하며, 지속가능발전교육 관점에서 볼 때 유아 물교육에 대한 유치원 교사들의 인식이 어떠한지 조사하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 연구방법은 유치원 교사 257명을 대상으로 설문조사하였다. 연구결과 첫째, 현재 유치원 현장에서 이루어지는 물교육은 지속가능발전교육에서 추구하는 핵심가치의 구현과는 거리가 먼 단편적, 교사 중심적, 그리고 소수 특정주제에 편중된 양상으로 실행되고 있었다. 둘째, 유치원 교사들은 지속가능발전교육의 관점에서 물교육을 인식하는 정도는 낮은 상태이지만, 우리나라의 물 부족 현실, 환경오염 및 지구온난화 문제 등과 관련하여 유아 물교육이 필요하다는 점에 대한 인식은 높은 편이었다. 본 연구결과에 기초하여 결론적으로 유아 물교육이 지속가능발전교육 차원에서의 교육 내용과 방법으로 재정향될 필요가 있다는 점과 지속가능발전을 위한 유아 물교육 프로그램 개발 및 관련 교사교육이 빠른 시일 내에 실행될 필요가 있음을 제언하였다.

It is the ninth year of the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development launched by the United Nations. This study examines the status of such education in Korean early childhood institutions by inquiring into the current water education status of our kindergartens, through determining how kindergarten teachers perceive water education for young children for sustainable development. To this end, a questionnaire survey was sent to over 257 kindergarten teachers. Analysis of the responses reveal 1) that current water education practice in kindergartens is fragmentary, teacher-centered, and focused on few particular topics, such strategies are far from realizing core value of education for sustainable development, and 2) that teachers` recognition of the need for education for sustainability overall is at a low level, yet their recognition of the necessity for water education for young children, in relation to problems such as the water shortage in Korea, environmental pollution, and global warming, seems to be at a high level. Based on these findings, it is proposed that water education for young children be reoriented toward early childhood curriculum content and methods in keeping with education for sustainable development and that program development and teacher training be initiated in the immediate future.
