A Study of English Intonation Education in Korean Middle and High Schools: Focusing on School Textbooks

The purpose of this study is to investigate how English intonation is educated in Korean middle and high school English language classroom, to assess the current problems in real classroom situations, and to give some suggestions on improving students` English intonation. This study is based on the survey of 797 Korean students (399 7th grade middle school students and 398 10th grade high school students) and 29 Korean teachers who teach English at schools. Furthermore, 8 English school textbooks (4 textbooks for 7th grade and 4 textbooks for 10th grade) which are used in middle and high schools were analyzed. The results indicated that the students and teachers were aware of the importance of intonation in communication and felt the necessity of intonation instruction in the classroom. However, intonation instruction was not implemented in the classroom properly and sufficiently due to various reasons, including the fact that the current textbook materials did not provide ample amount of intonation learning/teaching.
