종교조직의 유형론에 따르면 퀘이커(Quakers) 혹은 퀘이커교(Quakerism) 종파혹은 기성종파(established sect)라고 할 수 있다. 종파의 특징이라면 제도화된 교회나 사회에 대한 저항의 성격을 지니고 있다는 점이다. 그러나 3백여 년의 역사를 갖고 있는 퀘이커교를 신종교로 볼 수 있는가에 대한 문제가 있을 수 있다. 신종교가 종교집단의 유형으로 볼 때 대부분 종파에 가깝다고 할 수 있다면 퀘이커교는 스스로 종파이기를 거부하지 않는 한 신종교의 맥락에서 살필 수 있을 것이다. 이러한 퀘이커교의 역사와 현재를 알아보고 퀘이커교가 한국사회에 이식되는 과정을 역사사회적인 맥락으로 살펴 그 의미를 찾아보는 것은 나름대로 의미가 있을 것이다. 퀘이커교는 시작 된지 많은 세월이 흘렀고 그 기간 동안 많은 변화가 있었다. 일체의 기성화된 제도를 거부하고 탄생한 퀘이커교도 시대의 변화에 발맞춰 혹은 시대의 요구에 외면하지 못해 제도화(programmed)하는 분파도 생겼던 것이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 퀘이커교의 또 다른 주류 곧 퀘이커교의 전통(unprogrammed)을 계승하고 있는 사람들도 있어 아직도 종파로서의 뚜렷한 특징을 갖고 있기 때문에 영원한 신종교라고 말하기를 주저하지 않는다. 이러한 퀘이커교는 평화증언이라고 하는 신앙고백을 통해 오늘도 국제사회에서 그 존재를 뚜렷이 하고 있다. 한국사회에 이식된 한국 퀘이커교의 의미를 찾아보면 첫째, 한국의 기성 기독교회에 미친 영향은 그렇게 크다고는 볼 수 없다. 그러나 퀘이커교는 본질에 충실한 전형적 교회를 함으로써 한국의 기성개신교회를 실천적으로 비판하는 한국 퀘이커교가 되고 있다. 또한 한국 퀘이커교는 내면의 빛을 찾고자 하는 침묵의 예배(Quaker Worship in Silence)를 통해 오늘날 한국의 기성교회에 잔잔한 충격을 주고있다. 둘째, 한국사회에 이식된 한국 퀘이커교가 갖는 의미는 그들의 평화증언(Peace Testimonies)이라고 할 수 있다. 퀘이커교는 집단적 그리고 윤리적 신비주의 (group and ethical mysticism)자들의 모임이며 평화를 실천하고자 하는 평화주의자들의 모임이라고 할 수 있다. 한국 퀘이커들의 평화증언과 실천은 평화가 그 어느때보다 절실히 요청되는 오늘의 한국사회에 꼭 필요한 소명이 되고 있기 때문이다.

Is it possible to regard Quakers with about 300-year-old history as new religion? According to typology of religious organization, it is possible to say Quakers or Quakerism is sect or established sect. When most of new religions are close to denomination, it is possible to examine Quakerism in a context of new religion. Quakerism has been underwent lots of changes until now. Quakerism which denies every single bit of established system formed institutionalized denomination due to change of the times. Nevertheless, for it has distinctive characteristics of denomination by inheriting the tradition, it is possible to be called as an eternal new religion. Quakerism makes its existence clear in the international community in the present through its confession of faith that is Quaker Worship in Silence. This article would investigate the history and present of Quakerism and examine the process to transplant into Korean society in a social context, and search its meaning. First, it is hard to see that the influence on established Christian Church in Korea is high. However, they criticize established reformed churches in Korea practically by making typical church which is faithful to its essence. In addition, Korean Quakerism gives quite sounds through Quaker Worship in Silence which tries to find inner light. Second, the meaning of Quakerism transplanted in Korean society is in their Peace Testimonies. They can be ethical mysticism and group of pacifists. Their Peace Testimonies and practice become essential calling for present Korean society that asks for peace urgently than ever.
