김수영은 한국현대문학을 오랫동안 양분해온 『창작과비평』(창비)과 『문학과지성』(문지)진영에서 각각 자신의 문학적 거점으로 평가되면서 큰 주목을 받아왔다. 창비 진영은 백낙청과 염무웅 등을 중심으로 해서 그의 현실의식에 주목해서 그를 참여 시인으로 평가해온 반면, 문지 진영은 현실에 대응하는 양식으로서의 모더니티에 주목하여 그를 모더니즘 시인으로 평가해온 것이다. 그러나 시평을 통해 확인되는 김수영 문학의 특성은 ‘현대성’과 ‘새로움’의 추구 두 가지로 분석된다. 그의 현대성은 ‘온몸의 시학’을 바탕으로 자유를 억압하는 모든 것에 대한 실천적 저항을 의미하며, 그의 새로움은 강한 개성을 의미하는 동시에 철저한 절망을 통해 죽음과도 같은 자기갱신을 향해 나아가는 과정으로서의 의미를 지니고 있는 것이다. 따라서 창비진영과 문지진영의 기존 평가는 김수영 문학의 본질적 측면을 간과하고 있는 것으로 평가될 수 있다. 김수영이 추구한 문학은 ‘죽음’과도 같은 ‘새로움’을 견뎌내면서 자유를 억압하는 모든 것을 ‘온몸’으로 거부하는 진정한 ‘현대성’의 지향인 것이다.

Kim Su-Yeong has attracted considerable attention from 『Creation and criticism』(Changbi) and 『Literature and Intelligence』(Munji) that bisected the modern Korean literature for long time as being evaluated as their literatural stronghold. Changbi camp centering around Baek Nak-Cheong and Yeom Mu-Ung has evaluated him as one of participant poets giving attention to his sense of reality, while Munji camp has evaluated him as one of modernist poets giving attention to his modernity as a style facing to the reality. However, the characteristics of Kim Su-Yeong`s literature identified through comments are analyzed by two aspects, ``modernity`` and ``novelty``. His modernity means a practical resistance against everything that suppresses freedom based on ``the poetics of whole body``, and his novelty means a strong individuality and at the same time the process toward self-renewal like a death through thorough despair. Therefore, the existing evaluation of Kim Su-Yeong by Changbi camp and Munji camp overlooked the essential part of his literature. The literature Kim Su-Yeong sought is the aiming at the real ``modernity`` that refuses everything that suppresses freedom with the whole body, while enduring the ``novelty`` like ``death``.
