본 연구는 순자의 천(天)사상을 고찰하고, 그로부터 생태 교육적 의미를 찾아보고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 순자의 사상에서 천의 의미, 천의 기능과 인간의 역할에 대해 살펴보고, 순자의 천사상에 나타난 생태 교육적 함의를 논의하였다. 순자의 천사상에 나타난 생태교육적 의미는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 악한 본성을 교화한 인간이 예(禮)로서 자연 생태계의 평형을 위하여 일하는 것을 인간다움의 척도로 보았다는 점이다. 따라서 생태위기에 직면해서 인류의 미래를 위한 교육의 과제는 인간이 생태계와 조화롭게 살아가는 것이 인간다움의 필수 요소임을 인지하게 하고, 자연과의 조화에 참여하는 의무감을 강화해야 한다. 이것은 교육의 본질이 인간다운 인간을 지향하는데 있다는 점에서 21세기의 교육받은 인간의 척도에는 생태계 보호에 주체적으로 참여하는 인간의 모습이 포함되어야 한다는 것을 의미한다. 둘째, 자연생태계가 조화를 이루어 갈수 있도록 역할을 하는 책임이 인간에게 있다는 점이다. 이러한 사상은 오늘날 생태계 파괴의 책임이 다름 아닌 인간에게 있음을 자각하게 하고, 따라서 인류의 미래를 위한 21세기 교육의 과제가 인간의 자연에 대한 배려의 태도와 책임의식을 형성하는 것이어야 한다는 것을 시사한다. 셋째, 자연과 인간이 공생관계에 있으며 자연 생태계와 조화를 이루면서, 자연을 활용의 범위는 자연의 법칙을 거스르지 않는 범위 내에서 허용될 수 있다는 점이다. 이러한 사상은 자연을 착취의 대상으로 보았던 인간중심적인 사상이 가져온 생태계 위기의 문제를 인식하고 생태계의 질서유지에 직접 참여할 수 있는 자세를 기르는 것이 인류의 지속 가능한 발전을 위한 교육의 중요한 과제임을 강조하는 것이라 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the idea on Heaven and suggest implications about Ecological Education. For this study, the meaning of Heaven derived from Xun-Zi and the role of Heaven and human were examined. As a result of the study based on Xun-Zi`s idea on Heaven, there were Ecological Educational implications as follows: (1)The human who had overcome his own human nature of evil considered working for balance of ecosystem with courtesy as a measure of human. Thus, to overcome ecological crisis in the future, a harmonious relationship between human and the ecosystem has to be treated as a critical factor. Also, a sense of duty of keeping the harmonious relationship with nature has to be intensified. The measure of educated human in the 21st century has to include a quality of protecting the ecosystem in that the essence of education pursues human as a human being. (2)Human has the responsibility for managing the ecosystem in a harmonious manner. According to Xun-Zi`s, the cause of the destruction of the ecosystem is human. Therefore, human has to form an attitude for care of nature and a sense of obligation. (3)Human has been in a symbiotic relationship with nature. Furthermore, the law of nature allows human to control and use the nature in a appropriate limit. This idea focuses on the ecosystem crisis caused by anthropocenterism which treats nature as an object for exploitation. And it also contends that the human quality of participating in practical activities for the balance of nature should be developed for sustainable development.
