홍여하의 학문 가운데 제대로 주목받지 못한 영역은 經學과 경서 해석에 대해서다. 홍여하의 행장에 따르면, 그는 젊은 시절부터 경학에 관심을 보여 「庸學口義」·「四書發凡口訣」등을 남겼다고 하였으나, 현전하는 것은 「四書發凡口訣」일부와 문집에 산견되는 일부 경학 관련 자료뿐이다. 하지만 이런 자료들은 17세기 영남학파의 경학을 일별할 수 있는 귀중한 것으로 여겨진다. 필자는 선행 연구를 통해 홍여하의 시세계와 경서 해석의 상호 연관 관계를 거칠게나마 주목하였다. 본고에서는 기존의 성과를 두루 수용하여 홍여하의 경학과 경학관, 경서 해석 양상 등에 대해 집중적으로 조명하고자 한다. 홍여하는 경학과 산문을 별개로 인식하지 않고 先秦 이상의 고문이 경학에도 그대로 적용된다고 했다. 그래서 홍여하는 경학이 첫째 『춘추좌씨전』·『사기』 등 先秦 古文에 바탕을 둔 문체를 중시해야 한다고 했으며, 이를 궁경관에 그대로 반영하여 문장과 경학을 별개로 여기지 않았다. 홍여하의 경서 해석은 주자설을 매우 신뢰하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 홍여하는 주자의 경서 해석이 첫째, 先秦 이상의 언어를 사용하였으며, 둘째 경문 첫 구절에서 대지를 제시하였고 그 아래 구절부터는 대지를 부연 설명한 구조로 이루어져 임을 간파하여 篇題와 題辭를 통해 이를 밝혔으며, 셋째 實詞와 虛詞 한 자도 그 쓰임을 낱낱이 구분하여 文理에 적확한 해석을 내놓았다는 점을 들어 주자 해석을 매우 신뢰하고 있음을 살펴보았다. 이와 같은 홍여하의 주자설 신뢰는 讀書를 통한 自得의 과정을 통해 이루어졌다. 이를 통해 완성된 홍여하의 주자설 신뢰 양상은 그전의 학자들에게서는 볼 수 없는 독창성을 지닌다. 또 동시에 활동한 송시열과 비교해 보면, 외재적 요인을 배격하고 보다 주자설 자체를 신뢰함을 주목하였다고 하겠다.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze Writting of Confucianist Classic Studies by Hong-yeha (洪汝河). Hong-yeha (洪汝河) considered Writting of Confucianist Classic Studies as the same with general literature. And he believed that the way of analyzing 古文 in Chinese Early Chine Era could be applied to Writting of Confucianist Classic Studies as well. Therefore, the interpretation of Hong-yeha (洪汝河)`s Writting of Confucianist Classic Studies put an importance on these followings. most of all, he put an emphasis on a style of Early Chine` writings such as Shi ji (史記)·Chunqiuzuoshishuan (春秋左氏傳), and so on. Therefore he reflected this belief in the interpretation of Writting of Confucianist Classic Studies. As a result, the interpretation of Hong-yeha (洪汝河)` Writting of Confucianist Classic Studies was based on interpretation by Zhu Xi. And there are several reasons that Hong-yeha (洪汝河) thought highly of Writting of Confucianist Classic Studies by Zhu Xi. First of all, Zhu Xi used the language of Early Chine Era. Secondly, he pointed out an unique structure of Confucianist Classic that the main idea was shown at the very first sentence and the following sentences were to explain and support the main idea. Lastly, Zhu Xi presented an exact way of translating these sentences by distinguishing the usage between a noun and an expletive. After all, the reason why Hong-yeha (洪汝河) followed the Zhu Xi`s interpretation is because he had earned self-acquirement(自得) through his consistent study on reading. In this point, Hong-yeha (洪汝河) showed his unique style that his firm belief on Zhu Xi`s interpretation and that previous scholars had not ever showed before. Besides, compared to a contemporary scholar, Song-siyeul (宋時烈), Hong-yeha (洪汝河) put a light on Zhu Xi`s interpretation itself, leaving out external factors.
