매월당은 불의한 현실에서 자신의 뜻을 펴지 못하고 지배체제 밖의 삶을 살다간 방외인이다. 그러나 이러한 상황에서도 그는 현실을 회피하거나 방관하지 않고 당대 지식인으로서 불의한 현실의 부조리와 모순에 대해 비판적 발언과 자유분방한 행동으로 대처했던 인물이다. 그의현실비판 의식은 우언시를 통해서 가장 잘 드러난다. 우언은 시대에 따라 그 특징을 달리하며 발달하였다. 중국의 우언은 선진시대의 철리우언, 양한시대의 권계우언, 당송시대의 풍자우언, 원명청시대의 골계우언으로 나눌 수 있다. 매월당은 풍자의 기능을 이용하여 당시 불의한 현실을 비판하였다. 그의 우언시들은 현실을 정확하고 사실적으로 묘사하고 있으며 이러한 현실을 매월당은 우언이라는 문학장르를 통하여 적극적인 태도로 비판하였다. 이를 통하여 우언이 작가자신의 정치 주장을 나타내는데 사용될 뿐만 아니라 그것을 실천에 옮기는 데에도 사용되었음을 알 수 있었다. 그의 우언시는 당대 정치현실 비판과 관료 사회 비판으로 나눌 수 있었다. 이러한 주제의식은 애민의식이 바탕이 되어 불의한 현실을 비판하기 위해서였다. 그의 우언시에는 『시경』에서 그 제목이나 구조, 소재의 이미지를 차용하여 창작한 작품들이 있었는데 이는 시의 형식적인 면만을 빌린 것이었다. 우의를 가탁한 소재의 특징들은 매월당의 세심한 관찰력에서 비롯된 것이었음을 알 수 있었다.

Maeweoldang was an outsider who lived outside the system unable to achieve his dreams in the injustice reality. However, he was an intellectual of his times who fought against the unreasonable and unjustifiable realities of the society through critical remarks and freewheeling behaviors, neither avoiding nor ignoring the reality. The fable poetry that he wrote revealed his mindset that was critical of the society at that time. He criticized social injustice in his times using the function of satire. His fable poetry is depicting the reality in an accurate and realistic manner, severely criticizing it. This implies that allegories can be used for a writer not only to reveal his political opinion but also to put that into practice. The subject of the fable poetry he wrote can be categorized into two areas: those that criticized the political system and bureaucratic officials. The spirit of love of the people was based on such works that criticized the injustice society. Some of his fable poems adopted the titles, structures or images of objects of the works from the Book of Odes; however such borrowing was limited to the formal aspect of poems. Many of his works prove that the parable features of subject matters were created from his own thorough observation.
