본 연구에서는 동북아 지역통합 모델을 아시아 전체로 확대한 지역통합의 아시아 모델을 도출하고자 시도했다. 그 결과 기존 베버모델에 기반한 “시장통합형”과 “개발협력형”의 두 가지 유형이 도출됐으며 “다중심모델”과 “공동체모델”이 각각 도출되었다. 기존의 지역통합이론은 유럽을 대상으로 한 것이라고 할 수 있기 때문에 상당부분 이미 진행된 통합을 설명하는 것이었다. 반면에 아시아는 유럽과 비교하면 1952년 ECSC출범 때보다도 지역통합 정도가 아직 낮다. 따라서 기존 이론은 왜 아시아가 통합이 안 되고 있는지를 설명할지는 모르지만 통합이 어떻게 이루어져야 하는지를 설명하지는 못한다. 지역통합의 아시아 모델은 미래에 일어날 통합이 어떻게 일어날 수 있고 어떠한 통합이 바람직한지를 설명하는 것이 될 수밖에 없다. 글로벌 금융위기 이후 유럽의 재정 위기가 심화되면서 유럽통합 모델에 대한 회의가 증대되고 있다. 아시아 지역통합이 유럽 모델을 그대로 답습할 수는 없지만 지금까지 하나의 벤치마킹할 수 있는 모범으로서의 기능을 해 온 것은 사실이다. 이제 통합을 시작하는 아시아로서는 유럽 모델의 위기는 이를 교훈삼아 보다 창조적이고 아시아에 맞는 새로운 모델을 정립해야 한다는 추가적인 부담을 가지게 하는 요인이다. 동시에 미국과 유럽 선진권의 글로벌 자본주의 시장경제 체제의 쇠퇴는 아시아 통합이 지향하는 아시아공동체가 어떠한 모습을 가져야 하는가에 대한 문제에 더욱 관심을 기울이게 하지 않을 수 없게 한다. 지역통합을 넘어 새로운 문명 대안의 모색까지 하게 하는 문명사적 과제를 던져주고 있다.

This paper tries to derive an Asian model or Asian models for regional integration by expanding the already suggested Northeast Asian model for regional integration. The derived Asian model has three components. One is the Weberian model like the Northest Asian model, which means that the state remains the strongest sector for regional integration. But, in the Asian model, the Weberian model could be classified into two types. One is “the market integration type”, the other is “development cooperation type”, according to the criteria of the level of development and which field plays the more important role between economy and security. The second component of the Asian model is the multi-core model considering the fact that Asia is a vast region or continent with extreme diversity and huge gaps inside the region. Unlike the European model Asia should have multiple core groups by which the integration proceeds. Currently the most influential core groups are ASEAN and China-Japan-Korea. The third component is the community model. In this case the community has four meanings. One is that the community should start from a low level integration and be a democratic one. The second is that the Asian integration is culture-oriented. The third is that the community should be open to every country who wants to join. The last is that the community should have a vision for “community-capitalism” as an alternative to Western capitalism or the Washington consensus.
