이 논문은 1920년대 중반부터 1930년대 초반 『삼대』에 이르는 염상섭 장편소설의 미학적 특징과 문학사적 의미를 새롭게 설명하기 위해서 작성되었다. 필자는 그시기 염상섭 소설의 통속성을 식민지적 상황을 넘어서려는 서사전략의 소산으로 이해한다. 염상섭은 식민지와 노블의 관계를 면밀하게 분석했던 인물이다. 그는 지식 인문학의 성격이 강했던 초기 단편과 『만세전』의 한계를 대신할 방법적 대안으로 통속의 서사를 발견하고 자신의 방식으로 그것을 재창조했다. 통속성은 식민지 사회 속에서 대중의 정서와 작가의 관점을 동시에 투사할 수 있는 서사방법이었다. 염상섭은 통속서사의 일반적 질서를 독창적으로 비틀면서 자신의 예술적 의도를 관철시 켰다. 그의 통속성은 재래의 문화적 관습을 존중하고 서구적 모더니티에 대한 일방적 경도를 차단하면서 식민지 현실을 재현하는 복합적 효과를 내장하고 있었다. 1920년대 장편소설을 그러한 관점에서 읽을 때 염상섭문학의 새로운 이해 가능성이 생겨날 것으로 판단한다.
The aim of this paper is to reinterpret Yeom Sang-seop`s novels written between the middle of 1920s and early 1930s represented with the novel Samdai(Three Generation). Not to mention, my attempt is meant to newly evaluate the esthetic character and their status in Korean literary history. I appreciate Yeom`s popular fictions in this period as the products of his own narrative tactic to overcome the restricted reality of colonial Korea. Yeom Sang-seop was a writer who arrived at a scrupulous analysis for novel`s way of being in colony-how to be related to the common people of Korea. In other words, he realized the possibility which popular narrative might achieve and recreated it in his original way. It was preferably a methodical alternative to overpass his early short stories characterized as an intellectual literature, and limitation of the novella Manseijeon(Eve of Independent Movement). His popular narrative style might be the very way how he could project simultaneously people`s sentiments and writer`s viewpoint. It could be said that he accomplished his artistic intention through creatively adjusting the conventional grammar of popular narratives. The popular nature in Yeom Sang-seop`s novels combined multi-effects to imagine the reality of colonial Korea while valuing cultural mentality tradition of common people in Korea and also blocking the over inclination toward western modernity. Reviewing his full-length novels mainly written in 1920s from this perspective will certainly lead us to a new prospect in understanding his literature in general.
