Liu Xie`s `Tangbianlun(通變論)` or `The Theory of Tradition and Change` can be understood as something that has made `tradition and heredity` the focal paint in the history of Chinese literary criticism and that strongly supports the spirit of `returning to antiquity(復古)`. Of course, during the proceeding periods the issue of `tradition and change` was raised in the I Ching (周易) or Book of Changes, but it focused solely on the philosophical matters, not the literary ones. The motive that propelled Liu Xie to suggest the theory of tradition and change can be directly traced to the belief that in the process of the declining authentic Chinese literature, only the spirit of returning to antiquity can overcome the aesthetical(formalistic) literary trends. The reason for the issue of `tong(通)` or tradition than the issue of `bian(變)` or change. Therefore, it should be avoided to judge Liu Xie`s Tongbianlun(通變論), in a generic manner simply as one that is juxtaposing `returning to antiquity` and `creating the new.` The way of thinking of mine is based on the belief that the ideas hereforth that regard Liu Xie` approach is eclectic one may incorrect and unnecessary prepossession, That means the importance of the `tongbianlun` as a literary theory trying `return to antiquity` should be reevaluated. As a matter of fact, it can hardly be declined that, Liu Xie emphasized the necessity of `zhuojin(酌今)` or `judging the present$quot; based on the `cangu(參古)` or `consider in antiquity,` as a doctrine of his `tongbianlun,` though, his final conclusion can be said to be `returning to antiquity.` What the author feels sorry about this study is that it did not deal with the influences of Liu Xie` `Tongbianlun` on the trends of returning to antiquity during the Tang dynasty, even though the author is well aware of the fact. Hopefully it well be dealt in the other paper in the future.
