미확인 비행물체를 뜻하는 UFO는 대기 중에서 일어나는 기상(氣象) 현상과 같은 자연 현상의 일부로서 그 원인이 밝혀지고 있다. 그러나 어떤 UFO 현상은 명백하게 원인이 규명되지 않고 있는 것도 현실이라고 한다. 이러한 UFO는 단순히 공상과학 소설이나 영화 속에 등장하는 허구적인 존재가 아니라 사실적인 존재로 이해되기도 한다. 한편 더 나아가 UFO는 새로운 종교 출현의 원인이 된다. UFO와 관련된 다양한 신종교들이 서양 문화권을 중심으로 출현하고 있다. 현재 국내에서 자생적으로 발생한 UFO 관련 신종교는 아직 없는 것으로 보인다. 서양에서 발생한 UFO 관련 신종교로서 세계적으로 지속적인 활동을 전개하고 있는 대표적인 신종교 가운데 라엘리안 무브먼트가 있다. 본 논문은 라엘리안 무브먼트가 국내에 유입되어 어떤 활동을 전개하고 있는지에 초점을 맞춤으로써 UFO와 관련된 신종교로서의 라엘리안 무브먼트를 이해하고자 한다. 라엘리안 무브먼트는 1980년대부터 국내에서 활동하고 있는 것으로 추정된다. 한국 라엘리안 무브먼트는 특별히 도서출판사 메신저를 통해서 다양한 라엘리안 무브먼트 관련 서적을 출판하며 적극적으로 홍보 활동을 하고 있다. 그 서적들은 라엘리안 무브먼트의 창시자인 라엘이 외계 생명체로부터 전달받은 메시지를 소개하고 알리는 내용이 주류를 이루고 있다. 그 외에도 한국 라엘리안 무브먼트는 라엘이 서방의 미륵(Maitreya)임을 알리는 홈페이지를 개설하는 등 현재 인터넷을 통한 정보 접근의 용이함을 활용하고 있다. 이러한 라엘리안 무브먼트는 기독교의 성서를 재해석하며, 불교를 지향하는 성향이 있다. 한마디로 라엘리안 무브먼트는 종교와 과학을 ``과학 중심의 종교``로 재편성하는 특징을 보이고 있다.

It is being revealed that natural phenomena such as atmospheric phenomena that occur in the atmosphere are the causes of UFO, which stands for an unidentified flying object. However, it is the reality that the causes of some UFO phenomena are not getting revealed clearly. UFO is sometimes understood as realistic beings, instead of fictional beings that appear in science fictions and movies. Furthermore, UFO sometimes becomes the cause of emergence of new religions. Diverse new religions that are related to UFO are emerging around the Western cultural sphere. It looks like domestic UFO-related religions that emerged spontaneously do not exist yet. Among new UFO-related religions that appeared in the West, Raelian Movement is typical new religion that is conducting continuous global activities. By focusing on the types of activities that Raelian Movement is conducting after coming to Korea, this study wishes to understand Raelian Movement as new religion that is related to UFO. It is estimated that Raelian Movement has been active in Korea since the nineteen eighties. Especially, Korean Raelian Movement is actively conducting promotional activities by publishing diverse Raelian Movement related books through book publisher messengers. Most of such books are about delivering messages that Rael, the creator of Raelian Movement, received from extraterrestrial life. In addition, Korean Raelian Movement is focusing on internet promotional activities as well, by creating a website that spreads their claim that Rael is Maitreya of the West. Raelian Movement re-interprets the Holy Bible of Christianity and has a Buddhism-oriented tendency. In other words, Raelian Movement has a characteristic of reorganizing religion and science, which are compatible, into ``science-oriented religion``.
