선수행은 모두에게 각각 절실한 삶의 문제를 해결하게 한다. 선수행은 논리적인 문답이 아닌 논리성을 뛰어넘는 선문답을 통해 깨달음을 얻는 것이고, 그 깨달음으로 인해 자신의 삶에 대한 답을 얻는 것이다. 어려운 생활을 보내야 했던 1960년대에 지허(知虛)는 선방수행과 토굴수행을 하면서 자신의 문제를 풀고자 하였다. 그는 선방의 규율에 따라 선방수행을 해나갔지만, 깨달음을 완전히 구하지 못해 또다시 토굴을 찾아가 토굴수행을 해나갔다. 그는 이런 수행을 통하면서 다양한 문제들을 해결하고 있다. 그의 수행목적은 성인(成人)을 위한 선수행이었다. 성인은 말 그대로 사람을 완성해 가는 것이다. 선수행은 교육의 목적인 자아실현의 과정이면서 실제적 방법이다. 자신을 발견하기 위해서는 자신을 관리할 줄 알아야 하고 스스로 자신의 소리에 귀를 기울여야 한다. 내 안에 진정한 스승이 있는 것이므로 우선 자신을 잘 살펴야 한다. 그 결과 자신을 잘 알게 되었을 때, 자신이 무엇을 하여야 하고 어디로 가야 할 지를 알 수 있는 것이다. 나를 찾는 과정인 선수행은 단순히 수학 문제를 풀 수 있는 지식 구하기가 아니다. 그것은 일상을 살아가는 우리의 삶 전체를 위한 문제이기도 하다. 내가 “왜 이 세상에 살고 있는지, 왜 이 사회에서 구성되어 있는지, 그렇다면 나는 무엇인지”를 끊임없이 자문자답하면서 그 문제를 해결하기 위해서 공부를 하고 스승을 찾는다. 이러한 과정에서 스스로가 변화하고 점점 성숙된 사람이 되어간다. 그러므로 선방수행과 토굴수행도 고행의 연속이지만, 결국 성인이 되어가는 그 과정과 길을 제시해 줄 수 있는 것이다.
Sunsuhaeng(禪修行) is still performed today in forms of Sunbangsuhaeng(禪房修行) and Togulsuhaeng(土窟修行). Although Sunbangsuhaeng and Togulsuhaeng differ in the place and life, they have common in that they find one`s own problems with one`s own issues. In education, there should be a person who raises autonomous self-questions. That one finds his problems is self-discovery. Only someone who discovered himself could experience self-realization. Without the process of self-realization, our school education could not be free from mere acquisition of knowledge or skills for acquiring knowledge, and students could not have opportunities for learning wisdoms and skills for their lives and would be subsumed to others or society. There is nothing more important than reflecting one`s life seriously, reflecting self, and deliberating essential value of studying. Unless they think about the reason why they study, students would blindly follow existing value held by the society. The result of that would be students study not to realize self and be a holy man, but to reach to social success. Study without self has no power to impose meaning. Educational purpose is oriented to value. The value is fundamental and core one that human beings should internalize. However, overall belief in our society values good grade and emphasizes instrumental value of education for entering prestigious schools which is considered pre-stage for well-paid jobs. As a result, parents and society exacerbate competition in which students do not regard others. Such a competition would bring up a selfish person and in turn, the person would be caught in vicious cycle to be subordinated to mammonism, without enjoying valuable life. Therefore, we should teach students to reflect their lives continuously either in school or home. Only when they give careful consideration on their meaningful future, they could find meaning and interest and be an active agent in studying, by deciding direction to which they proceed and impose value on it.
