베버는 자신의 명저 『프로테스탄트 윤리와 자본주의 정신』에서 루터의 신학에 대해 평가를 하였다. 특히 루터의 이윤추구에 대한 거부를 자본주의 정신에 있어서 스콜라주의 보다 도 더한 퇴보라고 보았다. 그러나 본 소론을 통해 이러한 베버의 주장은 편파적이고 논리적 비일관성 이 있음을 살펴보고 오히려 루터의 사랑의 신학과 목회적 관심은 오늘날 이기 주의적이고 물신주의적인 자본주의 정신에 실제적인 대안이 될 수 있음을 밝 히고자 한다.

M. Weber evaluated Luther`s theology in his masterwork 『The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism』. Especially he urged that Luther`s rejection on pursuit of profits is regression of the spirit of capitalism worse than scholasticism at the spirit of capitalism. But This paper claims that Weber`s theory is biased and inconsistent logically, but rather this paper will suggest that Luther`s theology of love and pastoral concern is an alternative idea for the selfish world of selfishness and mammonism the fallen spirit of capitalism not ideally but practically.
