상고주의(尙古主義)는 주로 삼대(三代) 문물제도를 흠모하여 자기 시대에서도 그것을 재현시키려는 사상적 원리를 의미한다. 이러한 상고주의는 유교국가였던 조선 전기의 교육제도에도 깊는 영향을 미치게 되었는데, 조선초 학교제도 확충 배경 중의 하나가 바로 상고주의였던 것이다. 또한 조선 전기에서 국학을 포함한 모든 관학들뿐만 아니라 사학(私學)까지도 삼대 교육제도의 연장선상에 있을 때 존재 명분을 확보할 수 있었다. 삼대의 이상적 교육을 추구하는 상고주의는 현재 교육에 대한 반성의 계기가 됨으로써 당시 침체된 교육을 회복해야 한다는 당위성을 환기시키는 역할을 하였다. 이처럼 상고주의는 조선 전기 학교의 확충과 그것의 유지, 그리고 교화의지의 자극에 기여하였으나, 결국에는 자신들의 학교를 외형적인 차원에서만 삼대 학교에 비교함으로써 스스로 위안을 얻으려는 경향이 대두되었으며, 이는 그들의 안일한 태도를 조장하여 전향적인 개혁을 가로막아 결과적으로 조선시대 학교교육의 정체를 초래한 원인이었다고 할 수 있다. 그리하여 조선 건국 초에 수립된 학교제도가 제대로 기능을 수행하지 못했음에도 불구하고 삼대로부터 유래된 ``학교는 교화의 근원``이라는 인식 때문에 별다른 변화 없이 조선 말기까지 유지될 수 있었던 것이다.

This thesis is to identify the influences of the Confucian classicism on the education in the early Choseon Dynasty. As it is universally known, classicism is one of the most outstanding characteristics of Confucianism. Confucian classicism is characterized with worship of ancient Chinese cultures, especially cultures of three ancient dynasties. This Confucian classicism had influence on the education in the early Choseon Dynasty much. And the conclusions of study are as follows: Firstly, Confucian classicism contributed to the reinforcement of schools in the early Choseon Dynasty. Secondly, the educational administrative officials lost courages for improvement of education because of the perfect educations of three ancient dynasties. So the schools declined as times passed by. Thirdly, the schools continued meaninglessly, as they were regarded as the symbol of education like that of three ancient dynasties. Lastly, after all, Confucian classicism was the main cause which hindered the renovation of schools in the early Choseon Dynasty.
