시조 속에 나타나는 한국의 악기 가운데 거문고를 중심으로 의미와 상징성을 살펴보기 위하여 시조에 기록된 시어(詩語)들을 중심으로 연구하였다. 시조를 통하여 발현된 거문고에 관한 의미와 상징성을 알기 쉽게 정리하여 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 시조에 나타나는 거문고와 관련된 시어에는 거문고를 즐기고 애호하던 풍류객들이 부여한 거문고, 현금 이외에 다양한 명칭이 등장한다. 둘째, 거문고를 조율하거나 음악을 연주하는 구체적인 행위가 표현되어있다. 감상용이거나 소장용으로 곁에 두고 바라보는 박제화된 악기가 아닌 실제 연주용으로 풍류 활동 속에서 호흡한 악기였다. 셋째, 거문고와 짝을 이루는 대상으로 학 이외에도 국화·바람·달·술 등이 등장하여 거문고와 연관된 다양한 매개체들을 확인할 수 있었다. 넷째, 거문고와 벗의 관계는 상호의존적 또는 보완적 관계의 긍정적 이미지를 구현하고 있다. 이상의 내용을 통하여 시조를 통하여 조선시대 풍류객들이 생각하는 거문고는 경외의 대상이거나 범접할 수 없는 영역에 속한 신기(神器)가 아닌 주변에서 친근하게 접할 수 있는 벗과 같은 존재이자 풍류와 여유로움을 대변하는 악기였음을 인지하게 되었다.

In order co examine the implicit meaning of komun`go also called hyon`gum 玄琴 which was considered the best instrument among Korean musical instruments, I have investigated the poetic diction used in sijo 時調. The result of the study on the meaning and representation of komun`go revealed in sijo is summarized below: First, there are various by-names for the instrument other than komun`go or hyongUm as a result of the wide interests and affection by the Confucian scholars in the Choson 朝鮮 periexl. Second, the lyrics depict the specific actions of tuning komun`go or playing music, which implies that the instrument was meant not for appreciation or possession but for the practical use of playing music in daily life. Third, being paired with chrysanthemum, wind, moon and wine in addition co cranes, komun`go appears with various objects in the lyrics. Fourth, the relationship between komun`go and a friend forms a positive image that IS interdependent and complementary. Though this study, I have recognized that komun`go was not considered something to be awed or a numinous instrument that belonged to the unapproachable realm, but was considered as a friend that was easily accessible by the Confucian scholars and the men of refined taste in the Choson period.
