의상을 통한 예술적 표현이 극대화된 예술의상의 경우 미술의 양식사적 경향과 같은 맥락을 유지하며 전개되어 왔다. 현대에 이르러 미술 분야는 인간의 몸을 화두로 많은 작업이 이루어지고 있으며, 예술의상에서도 예외 없이 몸은 생물학적 의미를 초월하여 인간의 정신적 내면을 표현하는 장으로 혹 은 대상으로 다루어지고 있다. 본 연구는 미술과 의상의 동시적 영역인 예술의상의 정의와 형성에 큰 영향을 미친 20세기 후반 미 국의 예술의상운동에 나타난 표현적 특성을 분석해보고자 하였다. 이를 통해 예술의상의 표현방식과 표현 형식이 어떻게 전개되었는지 다시 한번 검토해봄으로써 오늘날 예술의상 작품에 어떠한 영향을 주었는지 알아보고자 하였다. 조형적 특성의 분석결과 먼저 다양한 소재의 사용으로 입을 수 있는, 또는 입을 수 없는 예술에 도 전하였고, 인체의 표현에 있어서 동물적 표현이라든가, 의인화된 사물들의 표현으로 예술적 표현을 극 대화시키고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 일상의 사물들을 다양한 주제로 사용하고, 일상의 풍경들을 의 상에 배치 함으로서 의상을 캔버스화한 작품들도 많이 등장하였음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 저속한 일상 의 사물과 표현기법으로 현대의 키치미술이 그대로 적용된 예술의상도 등장하였음을 알 수 있었다. 예술의상 작가들은 소재와 형식에 대한 자유를 획득하기 위해 의상의 형태를 최소한으로 간결화 하거나 인체 형태를 암시하려는 의도 하에 의상의 기능성을 과감히 배제하기도 하였다. 심지어 일부 예술가들은 고도의 개념적인 의상을 제작하여 결과적으로는 입을 수 없는 예술품으로 이미지를 형태화 함으로써 예술적 표현을 극대화시키기도 하였다. 이를 통해 20세기 후반 미국의 예술의상은 대량생산되는 획일화된 옷의 규격화된 틀로서의 신체 개념으로부터 벗어나 이상적 인체미를 탈피한 경향들을 나타냄으로서, 기존의 의상에서 중요시 다루어 왔던 미학적 가치를 거부하고 의상형식에 있어서의 창의성과 실험정신을 고무시키는 조형적 양상으로 나타났고, 인체를 이용해 개인의 심상을 심층적으로 표현하고 의상의 커뮤니케이션 기능과 연결시켜 의상에 생명력을 불어넣으려는 시도가 활성화되었음을 알 수 있었다.

Art to wear as an artistic expression of clothing has been maintained, developed in close relation to the artistic mode. In modern society, many works on human body in the artistic field have been established as a main subject. Without any exception, Art to wear works expressed on the basis of human body were the subject and area expressing human`s spiritual inside transcending biological meaning. Fashion art as a term originated in ``Art to Wear`` started from ``Art to Wear Movement`` developed among women textile artists centering around America in the late of 20th century. For this purpose, attention was given to the phenomenon of decorporealization that images of the body and clothes found in the late of 20th century art to wear are transformed and distorted to produce conceptual images following artists` intention. By analyzing clothes images of the types of expression, the study deals with the problems of extension of the clothes and the identification of art to wear. According to the result of this study, The characteristics of expression in the late of the 20th century American Art to wear was organized into four categories: diversity of the material, multiplicity of the theme, distortion and transformation of body, expression of the kitsch. 1. The diversity of the material type of the works includes vinyl, glass, wood, plastics, as new material to the exclusion of clothes. 2. The multiplicity of the theme type of the works includes animal images, daily objet, landscape of the view. 3. The distortion and transformation of body type of the works attempts to obscure the border between body and surroundings. 4. The expression of the kitsch type of the works has vulgar elements, daily matters, free type beading and patch works. Through art to wear works, artists can express their intentions and are not restricted by the conventional functions of clothes; that clothes should be worn on the body. Therefore, art to wear works enabled artists to create unlimited meanings brought about many changes to the contemporary fashion art.
