백제와 신라 사이에 벌어진 관산성 싸움은 두 나라의 장래 명운을 결정짓는 한판의 승부였다. 이 싸움이 지닌 중요성은 작지가 않다. 그 동안 이를 전문적으로 다룬 논문이 적지 않게 나왔음은 그를 방증한다. 기왕의 연구를 통하여 관산성 싸움에 대한 전모는 거의 드러난 상태이다. 그런데 관산성 싸움과 관련한 기록 가운데 풀리지 않은 채 궁금증을 불러일으키는 대상은 싸움이 마무리될 즈음에 일어난 백제 성왕(聖王)의 마지막 처형 장면이다. 거기에는 사로잡은 성왕의 목을 치려는 신라의 전사(戰士)가 죽음을 바로 눈앞에 둔 성왕(聖王)과 나누는 대화 속에 신라의 국법(國法)을 운위(云謂)하고 있다. 이제 전사(戰士)는 성왕이 죽어야만 하는 이유로서 신라의 국법을 어겼기 때문이라 주장하고 있다. 무엇 때문에 전사가 포로로 잡은 백제 성왕의 목을 베려 하면서 굳이 신라의 국법을 어겼다는 이유를 명분으로 내세우는가, 이것은 지금까지 풀지 못하고 수수께끼로 남아 있는 대상이다. 논의 결과 신라가 성왕을 사로잡아 죽이는 것은 사실상 바로 직접인 553년 두 나라 사이에 있었던 맹약을 백제가 먼저 어겼기 때문이었다는 사실을 밝혔다. 성왕은 신라를 공격하기 위한 방편으로 자신의 딸을 신라로 보내면서 마치 우호관계를 유지하는 듯 맹세하였다. 그러면서 이듬해 신라와의 전면전을 벌였던 것이다. 신라국법을 어겼다는 것은 바로 그때의 맹세를 가리키며 성왕을 죽이는 명분으로서 신라가 제시하였다. 그런 시각에서 전후맥락을 따져보면 적지 않은 새로운 사실도 밝혀낼 수 있으리라 생각된다.
The Gwansanseong battle between Baekje and Silla was a contest to determine their fate in future. The significance of this battle is very high. A large number of theses technically dealing with this issue up to this time prove this. Previous studies have revealed almost the whole story about the Gwansanseong battle. However, there is one unsolved issue among all records regarding the Gwansanseong battle which stimulates our curiosity is the last execution of Seong of Baekje happened almost the end of the battle. At that time, a warrior who was trying to cut off Seong`s head made a conversation regarding the national law of Silla with Seong who was about to die. At this point, the warrior claimed that Seong had to be executed because he violated the national law of Silla. Why did this warrior clarify this justification even though he was about to cut off Seong`s head? This remains an unsolved mystery until now. A discussion revealed that Silla captured and killed Seong of Baekje because Baekje first violated a pact they concluded in 553. In order to attach Silla, Seong of Baekje sent his daughter to Silla, pledging to keep the amicable relations with Silla. And, Baekje went into a full-scale war with Silla next year. Silla presented his pledge as the justification for them to execute him. At this point of view, we might be able to find a large number of new facts by examining its context.
