A Comparative Study on Japanese and Korean Popular Words

First, the ratio of the political popular words is higher in Japanese than in Korean. Especially, those popular words related to Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi, who was regarded as a manufacturing machine of popular words, take up more than half of them in this area. On the other hand, both languages have revealed that they have produced the least number of economic popular words in this period. This phenomenon is probably attributed to the fact that in this time span the two countries had little economic issues. Next, in the field of society and everyday life, the ratio of the Korean popular words is much lower than that of the Japanese ones. However, the ratio of the Korean popular words in culture and entertainment is saliently higher than that of the Japanese ones. It is analyzed as that the appealing power of public entertainers to the mass is much greater in Korea than in Japan. This study also showed that there appeared many popular words about women`s appearance or special behavioral pattern in the Korean language such as ``eoljjang``, ``kkulbeokji``, ``doenjangnyeo``, ``sinsangnyeo``, and ``beigeulnyeo``. In sports, there are twice the amount of popular words in Japanese than in Korean in three times more sports subfields. This could be the result of Japanese having more fans in diverse sports. It is found that the Japanese words of ``dokmandu (poinsonous stuffed bun)``, ``guerrilla hou (sudden torrential rain)``, ``otaku``, ``kanji`` are also used in Korea intact, and that the same word ``loser`` represents different objects in Japanese and Korean: an unmarried woman in her 30s with no children in Japanese, and a man who is less than 180 cms tall in Korean.
