본 논문은 한국의 신종교의 하나인 통일교가 일본 선교를 하면서 반대 단체에 의해 불법적으로 행해진 강제개종에 관한 문제를 다루고 있다. 통일교는 일본 선교 시 납치 감금에 의한 강제개종이 불법으로 오랜 기간 동안저질러졌으며, 그것도 선진국가인 일본에서 지난 46년 동안 4,300여 건의 사건이 조직적으로 진행되었다는 사실에 놀라움을 금할 수가 없다. 일본 통일교는 1958년 7월한국에서 파송한 최봉춘 선교사에 의해 개척이 되고, 일본 선교의 기반 조성과 세계선교를 향한 선교사 파송에 크게 이바지하였다. 특히, 일본 통일교는 국내활동과더불어 세계 섭리를 향한 경제적 책임을 다하였고, 오늘의 통일교가 있기까지 견인차 역할을 했다. 이러한 과정에서 일본 정부의 간접적인 탄압이 있었고 공산당 및 기성교회 목사를 중심으로 납치 감금에 의한 강제개종을 주도하였으며, 일본 통일교인들은 공포를 느끼게 되고 일본사회에서 고립될 수밖에 없는 상황이었다. 통일교인 납치 감금에 의한 강제개종은 지금까지 비도덕적이고 비윤리적인 사건으로서, 종교의 자유와 기본적 인권을 보장하는 일본에서 도저히 넘겨버릴 수 없는일이다. 따라서 우리는 가슴 아픈 이러한 피해 사실을 전 세계에 알리고 더는 이러한 일이 재발하지 않도록 해야 한다. 더불어 통일교는 불법감금 사건의 구체적 예방과 대책을 수립하고 피해를 본 교인들의 치유대책에 전력을 기울여야 한다.
This essay will analyze and research on the forced religious conversion by kidnapping and confinement that has been organizationally progressed for the past 46 years with approximately 4,300 cases on the missionary work of one of Korea`s new religions, Unificationism. Unificationism in Japan began in July of 1958 by a missionary named Choi Bong Chun who played a major role in building a foundation for missionary works in Japan and sending missionaries throughout the world. Japan played a leading role by taking on the financial responsibility both for its domestic activities and world`s providential course. Since early Unificationists began to expend new religious movement in Japan, the police and government intentionally has threatened them with forced conversion. Unificationists in Japan were suffered from abductions, illegal confinement, and mental torture by Christian minister and Japanese communist party. The kidnapping and confinement done to Unificationists to force a religious conversion is egregious and immoral, and such events occurring in Japan where religious freedom is a legal promise cannot be kept in silence. It is a duty for all of us to let the world know about such tragedy and make sure these happenings do not occur again. Finally, it is critical for the Unification church to build a detailed agenda to prevent such misfortune that may occur in the future, and put its utmost effort in taking care of its fellow Unificationists who have already experienced such tragedy.
