공리주의자인 밀의 종교적 입장은 그의 사후 1년 만에 출간된 Three Essays on Religion(1874)에 잘 나타나 있다. 그런데 밀은 “Utility of Religion”에서는 -살아있는 동안 인간의 도덕적 품성을 완성시키는 것을 이상으로 삼는- 자연종교인‘인간종교’를 옹호한 반면, “Theism”에서는 -죽은 후 천국에서의 영생을 약속하는 - 초자연종교인 ‘기독교’를 지지하는 상반된 태도를 보임으로써 그 스스로 혼동을 자초한다. 이 때문에 밀은 한편으로는 일관적이지 못한 사상가라는 비난을 받았는가 하면, 다른 한편으로는 공리주의자로서 비교적 안정된 입장을 견지하고 있었다는 평가를 동시에 받는다. 논자가 보기에 밀에 대한 이와 같은 서로 다른 두 가지평가는 그가 행위의 판단기준으로 언제나 ‘공리성의 원리’를 사용하는 고전공리주의자라는 사실을 잠시 망각한데서 비롯된 오해에 지나지 않는다. 다시 말해 공리주의자 밀은 기독교와 인간종교의 경우에도 각각의 종교가 산출할 공리성을 따져보았을 뿐 특정 종교에 대한 개인적 입장변화를 시도한 적이 없다고 보는 것이다. 이처럼 다소 혼란스럽게 보이는 밀의 종교관은 유사한 다른 문제에서와 마찬가지로 그가 ‘가장 넓은 의미의 공리주의자’를 꿈꾸었다는 사실을 염두에 둔다면 상당부분 해소될 수 있다는 것이 논자의 주장이다.

The utilitarian Mill`s religious position is well appeared in his posthumously book titled Three Essays on Religion(1874). This book consists of the following three essays, that is “Nature”, “Utility of Religion”, “Theism”. However, in his essay “Utility of Religion” Mill advocates a natural religion ``Religion of Humanity``, which was originally Auguste Comte`s invention and regards its ideal as to perfect human moral character while being in this world, but on the other hand in his essay “Theism” he supports a supernatural religion ``Christianity``, which promise one`s eternal existence while staying in the heaven after death. His contradictory attitude such as the above has himself brought about a kind of confusion in his religious thoughts. Though because of this he has been accused of an inconsistent philosopher for a long time, he has also been told to be a comparatively stable utilitarian thinker. I assert that this two opposite estimation of Mill on religion comes from the misunderstanding in which we forget the fact that Mill is a classical utilitarian who always uses the principle of utility as the standard of verdict of all ethical questions. That is to say, Mill as a utilitarian had just calculated the expected utility which might be produced in the case of ``Christianity`` and ``Religion of Humanity`` respectively. I also think that the so-called ambiguities and disorders in Mill`s religious thinking would be disappear considerably if we recall that Mill had always dreamt to become a utilitarian in the largest meaning.
