채제공은 문학을 정치적으로 잘 활용한 인물이다. 그는 시사 활동을 통해 동당 후학들의 문학적 능력을 배양하고, 그들이 과거에 합격하여 관로에 진출하는 것을 적극적으로 도왔다. 그가 정치적인 시련을 당해 재야에 있을 때에는 시회에서 古詩라는 원형적 형태의 시를 수창하였는데, 이는 본인들의 시회가 교유를 위한 문자 응수가 아니라 문학의 본질에 가까운 시를 짓는 시회라는 것을 천명한 것이다. 또한 시회에서의 고시 수창은 참여자의 문학적 역량을 보이고, 고시 형식이 갖는 경세제민의 뜻을 세상에 보이는 것이었다. 마지막으로 그의 시사는 혈연과 사승 관계를 통해 맺어진 결집력이 강한 모임이었고, 소인배가 아닌 지조 있는 군자들의 결사라는 점을 강조한 사대부 문인 결사이었다.

Chae Jaegong was good at using the political leverage of the literature. He developed the literary skill of same party followers and help them to pass the the civil service examination through the literary meeting. When he got the political difficulties, he exchanged ancient free verse, which was regarded as an original form of poetry, with his friend in his poetry club. This shows that the meeting was not a just diversion but a serious literary practice. He could demonstrate the literary capability and the will of benefiting the people through the exchange of ancient free verse. His poetry club was cohesive literati association who thought that keeping one`s fidelity was important.
