This paper examines the multicultural perspective in Willa Cather`s My Antonia (1918). Cather`s writing mainly focuses on the unique qualities of American life as a melting pot such as the problem of the Americanization of immigrants from the old world and the language policy in a multilingual society. In this fiction, Cather shows the diverse problems that immigrants face including bilingualism and the impact of European culture on American national identity. Cather writes that various immigrants` cultures nurture a unique American character. She stresses the sympathetic and respectful attitude toward the traditions of minority groups. Her resistance to any kind of dualistic oppression in a community, her caring attitude for the ostracized people, and her idea of how people`s thinking is shaped by nature makes her one of the leading writers of American character. In My Antonia, Cather emphasizes that various old world cultures would have a benevolent impact on the future of America. Her writing demonstrates that a heterogeneous, Europeanized Midwestern society could nurture a cosmopolitan culture throughout America. Although Cather`s ideal was successful in a limited way, her vision for a multicultural tolerant society cannot be regarded lightly.
