본 연구는 근 한 세기에 달하는 역사를 지닌 한국 근대 역사소설의 성격에 관한 비판적 고찰이다. 이와 같은 연구목적에 충실하기 위해 본 연구는 세 가지 구체적인 논점을 선정하였다. 첫째는 ``비-사건적인 것``에 역사소설이 주목하는 이유와 의의의 문제이다. 둘째는 대문자 역사가 망각한 시공간을 소문자 허구로 복원하는 역사소설의 서사 전략에 관한 논의이다. 그리고 마지막 논점은 ``사가연(史家然)하는 역사소설의 서술자와 서술자연하는 역사소설의 작가, 그리고 작가연하는 사가``, 세 층위에 걸친 발화가 담화상의 차이에도 불구하고 동일한 구조의 서사로 환원될 수밖에 없는 사정에 대한 것이다. 이 같은 논점들을 중심으로 본 연구는 한국 근대 역사소설 문학의 내재적 특질을 확인하고자 한다. 그 주요 분석 대상이자 증거 텍스트로 선정된 작품은 김영하의 『검은 꽃』이다. 20세기 초의 역사를 대상으로 21세기 벽두에 창기(創/記)되었다는 사실과 작품의 주된 배경이 멕시코 혁명사라는 점이 이 텍스트만의 예외적인 면모이며, 그럼에도 불구하고 한민족의 수난사가 그 주요 모티프라는 점이 전통적인 면모이다. 이 같은 역설적 국면이 앞의 세 논점들의 해명에 있어 이 작품을 최적의 텍스트로 꼽게 한 이유다.

This study analyzes the deep structure of historical novelists` creative motive that has been accumulated since historical novel was imported and translated in modern Korea. For this purpose three points are presented in this study. The first issue is about the reason for historical novelists to pay attention to the non-evenemential and its meaning. The second is about the narrative strategy of historical novels that reconstruct the lost public history with fiction. The last is about the common narrative characteristics of the narrators, historical novelists, and historiographers. This study grasps the major aspect of historical novel`s tradition of attempting to public history rather than fiction. Young-ha Kim`s historical novel Gumunkkot(black flower) was selected as a case since it is a suitable text to demonstrate historical novel`s eternal tradition.
