현재 ``효과``의 표준 발음은 [효:과]이다. 그러나 대부분의 언중들은 ``효과``를[효꽈]로 발음하고 있으며 뉴스 방송에서도 1950년대 이후로 ``효과``를 경음으로 발음하기 시작하여 1980년대에는 ``효과``의 발음이 완전히 경음으로 굳어진것으로 보인다. 1990년대에 뒤늦게 ``효과``의 발음을 평음으로 순화하기 시작했지만, 이미 변화가 완료된 후였기 때문에 사실상 이러한 발음 교정은 실패로 끝난 것으로 보인다. ``조건(條件), 사건(事件), 안건(案件), 요건(要件), 여건(與件)`` 등이 평음으로 발음되고 ``효과``와 유사한 의미와 구성을 가진 ``성과(成果)``및 ``전과(戰果)``가 경음 발음을 인정받고 있는 것을 감안하면 ``효과``의 발음 역시 변화를 인정하여 경음으로 규정하는 것이 타당하다.

The Standard pronunciation of ``hyokwa`` isn`t [hyok`wa] but [hyo:gwa]. But many people pronunce ``hyokwa`` as [hyok``wa]. And we can see that in broadcasting since the 1950s the ``hyokwa`` was pronounced as [hyok`wa] and in the 1980s this phonological chagne seems to be hardened completely. In the 1990s the pronunciation purification from fortis to lenis was started, but it was too late to change the pronunciation of many people. In fact the pronunciation purification of ``hyokwa`` was failed. As the pronunciation of ``jokeon, sakeon, ankeon, yokeon, yeokeon`` is fortis, of course the pronunciation of ``hyokwa`` can be fortis. As ``seongkwa, jeonkwa`` similar to ``hyokwa`` in sense and pronunciation have a fortis pronunciation, the pronunciation of ``hyokwa`` must be fortis.
