본 연구는 유치원 만 4세반 교실의 역할놀이 영역에서 이루어진 ``궁전 놀이``라는 가상놀이의 사례를 통해 즉흥성(즉흥연기)가 놀이의 구조와 안정성에 어떻게 작용하는지를 탐구하는데 그 목적이 있다. Sawyer(1997)의 협력적 즉흥연기에 착안하여 가상놀이가 만들어지고 유지되어 가는 과정에서 즉흥성의 역할을 분석하였다. 즉흥성은 가상놀이에 참여하는 유아들이 참여자 사이의 발화에 의존하여 협력적으로 놀이를 만들어가는 것을 의미한다. 연구 방법은 역할놀이 영역에서 일어난 ``궁전 놀이`` 장면을 비디오로 녹화하여 전사한 후 유아들의 모든 발화를 최소의 문장 단위로 나누어 발화의 교류를 즉흥성의 개념을 이용하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과 유아들의 즉흥성은 놀이의 프레임을 창조, 소멸, 재창조하고, 프레임 내에서는 주제의 변주를 통해 놀이를 만들고, 확장하는데 작용을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 유아들의 즉흥연기는 자발적, 불완전하며, 지속적으로 가상의 의미를 교류하고 이에 기반하여 협력적으로 놀이를 만들고 유지해가려는 동력이자 기제였고, 유아의 관점에서 즉흥연기는 발화의 특성인 대화성 그 자체이자 놀이를 만들고 유지하려는 정서적 상호작용이며 즐거움 그 자체이다. 가상놀이는 유아의 삶 자체이자 놀이하면서 삶을 연습하는 배움의 장이다. 이러한 다양한 경험을 제공하는 유아들의 자발적이며 자연스러운 가상놀이 자체가 교육일 수 있다는 인식의 전환이 요구된다.

This study aims at analyzing the role of improvisation in children`s pretend play. The term ``improvisation`` refers to ``improv`` in which performers play roles contingent upon player`s utterances or acts, and ``dialogic speech`` does also to conversational collaboration with speakers and listeners. These two terms are similar regarding collective meaning making, collaborative negotiation based upon contribution of each participant. The case taken in this study was ``palace play`` which occurred in 4 year old children`s kindergarten classroom. I first analyzed the flow of the play frame, and analyzed how children`s improvisational play played a role of developing and maintaining the play frame as well as play themes. The ``palace play`` flows as following segments: emergence of ``palace play`` frame - improvising ``palace play`` into ``house play`` - ``palace play`` frame runs with ``mother play`` frame - disappearance of ``palace play`` and maintaining ``mother play`` - emergence of new frame of play, In each segment, children`s improvisational play played a critical role in making, developing, altering, creating themes and frames, Within the process, children used the improvisational play to relate, extend, correct children`s utterances and thus the play is structure and maintained for their own pleasure.
