본 연구의 목적은 국제어로서의 영어 시대에 적절한 문화지도의 필요성을 강조하는 데있다.본 연구의 목적을 위하여 현재 시내 고둥학교에서 사용되고 있는 영어회화 교과서 중에서 가장 많이 채택되고 있는 4종의 교과서에 수록된 문화지도 내용 및 학습활동에 대한 분석을 실시하였으며, 또한 영어교사들을 대상으로· 문화지도에 대한 의견 조사를 실시하였다． 자료 분석은 질적 분석을 사용하였으며, 목표 문화를 다루는 데 있어서 교사들이 직면하는 문제점과 어려움, 그리고 적절한 문화지도를 위해서는 교과서의 어떤 점이 개선되어야 하는지를 분석하는 데 그 초점을 두었다. 분석 결과에 의하면, 효과적인 의사소통을 위하여 문화에 대한 이해가 중요하다는 점을 교사들은 충분히 인식하고 있었다. 하지만 교사들 스스로 문화에 대한 지식이 충분하지 못하며 또한 지도 방법에 대해서도 제대로 교육받은 바가 없기 때문에 실제 교실에서의 문화지도에 있어서는 상당히 어려움을 느끼고 있었으며， 아예 교실에서 문화를 거의 다루지 않는 교사들도 적지 않았다. 또한 어느 정도 문화를 다루고 있다는 교사들조차도 목표 문화에 대해 자신이 알고 있는 범위 내에서 사실적인 정보만 제공하는 정도가 고작이어서 문화에 대한 학생들의 통찰력을 기르기 위 한 체계적인 문화 지도는 거의 이루어지고 있지 못한 실정이었다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구 에서 주장하고자 하는 바는, 우리 학생들이 장차 다양한 문화권의 사람들과 영어로 원활한 의사소통을 할 수 있도록 돕기 위해서는 더 이상 영어가 특청 문화권의 언어가 아니라 세계의 언어라는 새로운 개념에 바탕을 둔 문화지도가 이루어져야 한다는 점과， 또한 문화지도를 위한 어떤 학습 자료나 학습 활동도 특정 상황의 여러 가지 요인들을 고려하지 않고는 의도한 결과를 얻기가 어렵다는 점이다. 한국 상황에서의 적절한 문화 지도에 대한 제언도 기술하였다.

The aim of this study is to call for a proper cultural instruction to meet the needs in the era of English as a lingua franca, The data collected for the aim of the study were the high school English teachers` responses in a written interview and the materials and activities for cultural understanding in four high school English conversation textbooks. A qualitative analysis was conducted, focusing on the problems/difficulties the English teachers face in dealing with the target culture and on the weaknesses of the textbooks for proper cultural instruction. Based on the result obtained, the study argues that in order to help the students communicate successfully enough with the people from different cultural backgrounds, the cultural instruction in the English classes should be based on the new conception that English today is the property of the whole world. In addition, the study also argues that unless the contextual factors are taken into consideration, no materials and activities in the textbook can bring about the intended result. Some suggestions are made to improve the cultural instruction in the Korean context.
