This study was conducted to investigate how the living habits and serum lipid and antioxidative vitamin levels effected the occurence of cerebrovascular disease. The study consisted of 38 hospital patients (16 males, 22 females) at 3 general hospitals in Taegu who suffer from cerebrovascular disease and 44 normal adults (21 males , 23 females). The results were as follows: The patient group showed an increased maximal blood pressure in both sexes but a significant increase in the minimal blood pressure in the females. Living a regular life style, the patient group experienced more stress than normal group. Total calorie, protein, carbohydrate, vitamin B1 and niacin were decreased significantly in the male patients but there were no changes in the female patients. The energy-nutrients consumption reached the recommended level in all subjects who were investigated. The eating habits of the patient group were not good. HDL-cholesterol and serum vitamin E levels were decreased significantly in both sexes in the patient group. The female group also experienced a decrease in the level of vitamin C. When the rate of occurrence of the disease was high serum vitamin C levels and maximal blood pressures of the male patients were significantly decreased and increased respectively, but there were no changes in the female patients. In the male patients, serum vitamin E and vitamin C, serum total cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol had a negative correlation between each other in the Pearson`s coefficient of correlation. There was also a negative correlation between HDL-cholesterol level and atherogenic index (AI) in both sexes. Body mass index(BMI), TC and maximal blood pressure had a positive correlation with AI in the female patients. According to the results of this study, the patients had higher blood pressure and more stress than normal. Also HDL-cholesterol, serum vitamin E and serum vitamin C levels were decreased significantly in the patients. Therefore, it is expected that refraining from smoking, proper excercise and certain other healthy living habits which can decrease stress and in addition suitable consumption of antioxidative vitamins can prevent the occurrence of cerebrovascular disease.
