안산지역은 한국 다문화주의의 이중성을 압축적으로 보여주는 전형적인 사례다. 한국의 다문화주의는 폭발적인 활동성에도 불구하고 전도된 결과들을 낳고 있다. 안산지역도 마찬가지다. 전국 최대의 이주민 밀집 거주 지역인 안산은 민간단체들의 선구적이며 적극적인 이주민 지원 활동과 선도적인 이주 행정으로 인해 한국의 다문화 으뜸 도시의 명성을 얻고 있다. 그러나 안산지역의 이주 현장에서 실제로 벌어지고 있는 일들은 이처럼 알려진 안산의 명성과는 상당한 거리가 있다. 원곡동에서 ``국경 없는 마을``이나 ``다문화 공동체``에 어울리는 문화적인 소통과 교류를 찾아보는 일은 어렵다. 오히려 원곡동은 하루가 다르게 공동화되어 가고 있다. 이 글은 이러한 문제의식으로 안산지역이 다문화 으뜸 도시로 부상하는 과정을 검토한 후, 전도된 효과가 만들어지는 원인을 비판적인 입장에서 탐색해보고자 한다.

Ansan is a typical case in which duality or paradox of Korean style multiculturalism can be definitely observed. Multiculturalism in Korea is growing major discourse in a couple of years, but its effects are very disappointing. The same thing happens in Ansan. A number of migrant people coming from almost 60 countries are living together in Ansan. A variery of activities to support them have been taking by both civil societies and city government. Actually Ansan come to win a reputation as a ``model multicultural city``. But there is a serious gap between what is known and what is happening. Though Wongok-dong is called ``Borderless village``, it is very hard to experience cultural interaction or community spirit. The more multicultural activities are taking, the more migrants are moving away. This paper reviews this paradox and explores some reasons.
