본 연구는 지속적으로 사교육을 받아온 여자 중학생 9명을 면담하여 그들의 사교육 참여에 영향을 미치는 요인들에 관해 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 제도화되어가는 학생들의 사교육 문화풍토를 이해하고 그들을 위한 올바른 교육환경을 조성하는데 기여하고자 한다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 성적향상을 위해 참여하게 된 사교육은 학생들에게 학업성취의 안전장치와 심리적 불안을 완화시켜주는 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 학생들은 성적하락의 원인을 공교육보다 사교육으로 보고 성적향상과 성적유지를 위한 사교육 참여를 지속하였다. 둘째, 학생들은 사교육 참여를 학습 적응을 위한 준비 및 미래에 대한 투자로 보았다. 이는 치열한 진학 경쟁을 위해 사교육을 받는다기보다는 사교육이 기본적인 교육투자라는 사회적 인식에 영향을 받았기 때문이었다. 셋째, 학생들의 지속적인 사교육 참여는 학부모의 추가적인 노력과 기대가 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 학부모의 상승지향적 기대는 사교육에 대한 학생 및 학부모의 추가적인 노력으로 이어졌다. 넷째, 사교육 참여 결정에 있어 학생들은 비합리적이며 상호의존적 의사결정을 내리고 있었다. 학생들은 주변의 교육적 환경 변화에 따라 상대 학생이나 학부모의 전략적 학원선택 행위에 영향을 받는 학원다니기 딜레마를 경험하고 있었다. 다섯째, 학생들에게 사교육 참여는 암묵적 사회규율로 받아들여지고 있었다. 그들은 무의식적 사교육 참여 행위를 ``습관``이라고 부르며 합리적인 교육의 선택 범위를 제한 받고 있었다.

This study investigates factors influencing the participation in private education of middle school students by analyzing their personal stories. This study intends to understand students` climate on personal education and to create an appropriate circumstance. 9 middle school students who have continued to participate in private tutoring institute are interviewed. Main findings are as follows. First, students mainly participated in private education for academic achievement, while the private education played a role of stabilizing students psychologically. Second, a participation in private education is to prepare for and invest in learning adaptation. Third, students` continuous participation is influenced by their parents, but they give an average degree of expectations. Fourth, because students perceive the private education as an accessible educational method, they make irrational and interdependent decision making. Fifth, students call their participation in the private education as ``habit``, interpreting as an implicit social regulation with a limited rational choice.
