The main objectives of this study were to survey practical situation of MSDs(Musculoskeletal Disorders) in terms of symptom prevalence rate and to investigate work-related risk factors in general hospitals. The study was conducted at two general hospitals located in metropolitan areas in Korea. The study was consisted of three parts. First part was questionnaire survey including MSDs symptoms and jos stress. Second part included investigation of working conditions such as working posture, labor intensity, and working environment by utilizing MSDs risk assessment tools(RULA, REBA, JSI, NLE) which were widely accepted in the field of ergonomics. Also job stress level was surveyed using Korea Standard Job Stress Assessment Tool. Total of 689 worker were answered the questionnaire and self-reported MSDs symptom complaint rate was 87.08% which was higher than average symptom complaint rate of overall industries. The main causes and job-related risk factors were awkward working postures, manual materials handing in patient handling and repetitiveness, respectively. Job stress level of hospital workers was also higher than Korean average job stress level. Lifting machines for patient handing and various mechanized assisting facilities are recommended to reduce the risk of MSDs for hospital workers.
