본 논문은 메리에 대한 사유실험에 입각한 잭슨의 지식논증의 구조를 분석하고, 그에 대해 반론이 가능한 다양한 지점들을 살펴본다. 먼저 방 밖으로 나왔을 때 메리가 새로운 것을 배우지 않는다는 데넷의 주장과, 메리가 새롭게 배우는 것은 경험을 기억하고 상상하며 식별하는 능력일 뿐이라는 루이스의 능력 가설을 살펴보고 그 난점을 지적할 것이다. 마지막으로 본 논문은 메리가 현상적 개념을 습득하며 그것에 기초한 새로운 명제적 지식을 획득하지만, 그렇다고 해서 그러한 지식의 획득이 물리주의에 아무런 위협이 되지 않는다는 "옛 사실/새로운 방식"을 옹호한다.
This paper analyzes Jackson`s knowledge argument based on the thought experiment for Mary, and displays various points from which we may disagree with Jackson`s conclusion. The particular focus has been placed on the responses from Dennett and Lewis, and I provide reasons why I am not convinced by their responses. Finally, I argue for an "old fact/new disguise" strategy such that, even though Mary acquires new propositional knowledge through the acquisition of new phenomenal concepts, it does not threaten physicalism.
