길었던 16세기 근대세계체계의 발전은 세 구조의 형성과 함께 이루어졌다. 첫째는 경제 구조(임금과 생산활동의 전 지구적 위계화를 구축했던 축배열적 노동분화), 둘째는 지정학적 구조(부분적일 수 밖에 없는 국가들의 자율성을 규정했던 국가간 체계), 그리고 마지막으로 사회문화구조(권위 있는 지식이 어떤 것인지, 그리고 사회적 행위주체들이 취할 수 있는 성취가능하고 타당한 행위가 무엇인지를 틀지었던 지식구조)가 그것이다. 지금이 역사적 체계는 위기에 처해있다. "역사사회과학"과 "사회인문학"은 이러한 사회문화적 위기를 인식하고 그에 대한 직접적 대응을 도모하는, 새롭고 상호보완적인 두 가지 지식생산 접근법을 형성하고 있다. 지식구조변화에 대한 역사적 분석은 역사사회과학이라 일컬어지고 있는 분야에서의 지적작업들에 새로운 방향들을 제시하고 있다. 사회인문학은 인간적 가치들이 배제되고 지식생산 내에서의 실질적 대안들에 대한 적극적 모색이 무시된 채 얻어진 어떠한 인간현실 이해도 문제적일 수 밖에 없다는 인식을 주요한 특징으로 한다. 이러한 노력들은, 보다 실질적으로 합리적이고 인간적인 세계를 향한 사회적 행위의 기초가 될 새로운 이해방식, 방법론, 제도적 배치들을 성취하는데 기여할 것이다.

The modern world-system came into being during the long sixteenth century as a set of economic structures (an axial division of labor that established a world-scale hierarchy of wages and production activities), geopolitical structures (the interstate system that defined the always partial autonomy of states), and socio-cultural structures (the structures of knowledge that framed what was to be considered authoritative knowledge and therefore what legitimate action could be undertaken with some degree of possible success by social agents). This historical system is in crisis. "Historical social science" and the "social humanities" constitute two complementary, emerging approaches to knowledge production that recognize and respond directly to the crisis in the socio-cultural arena. A historical analysis of the development of the structures of knowledge suggests new directions in intellectual work in what is becoming known as historical social science. A realization of the shortcomings of any understanding of human reality that excludes human values and the active search for material alternatives in the production of knowledge characterizes the social humanities. It is through such endeavors that new modes ofnderstanding, methodological approaches, and institutional arrangements will be made available as foundations for social action in favor of a more substantively rational, humanely human, world.
