고소설 가운데 특히 가정소설은 등장인물의 성격과 갈등, 결말 등에 있어 정형화된 양식을 띠고 있는 작품군이다. 그 가운데 조선후기 작품 중 <양기손전>은 다른 가정소설류에서 다루고 있는 동일한 소재를 다루고 있으면서도 새로운 시각이 돋보이는 작품이다. 이에 본고에서는 <양기손전>에 등장하는 인물들의 성격과 그 속에서 야기되는 갈등에 집중한다. 이는 작품이 유형화된 양상에서 벗어났음을 확인하는 작업으로 이를 통해 <양기손전>의 작품세계를 보다 면밀히 살피고자 한다. 먼저 <양기손전>의 주요한 등장인물은 그 역할에 따라 처와 첩, 남편, 계모의 측면으로 나눌 수 있다. 처와 첩이 등장하는 작품들에서 처는 선을, 첩은 악을 대표하는 인물로 그려져 왔다. 그러나 <양기손전>의 처와 첩은 그 성격을 선과 악으로 나눌 수 없는 인물들로 그려진다. 남편 역시 군자도 한량도 아닌 인물이다. 또한, 작품의 진행과 갈등 해결에 중요한 역할을 하는 계모 역시 악인으로 설정되어 있지 않다. 이렇듯 <양기손전>의 인물들은 전형성을 지닌 인물이 아니라, 지극히 현실적이고 인간적인 면모를 갖는 존재들이다. 다음으로 등장인물들의 갈등과 그 해결 방법의 모색을 살필 수 있다. 인물들의 성격이 선악으로 분명히 구분되지 않는 것과 마찬가지로 인물들이 겪게 되는 갈등도 현실적이고 개연적인 문제들이다. 그렇기 때문에 갈등의 해결도 충분히 실현 가능한 방법으로 모색되고 있다. 처와 첩의 조화로운 공존과 계모와 전실 자식들의 화합이 바로 모색된 갈등 해결의 방법이다. 그러나 <양기손전>이 보여주는 전혀 새로운 인물과 갈등, 그 해결 방법의 기저에는 남성을 중심으로 지탱되고 움직이는 당대 가족 이데올로기가 자리하고 있다. 축첩과 후처의 문제, 여성을 가정 내 불화의 원인으로 지목하는 시각이 있다는 점이 그것이다. 이를 통해, <양기손전>은 기존 소설에서 보여주지 않았던 인물과 갈등에 관한 새로운 시각과 시도를 보여준 작품임과 동시에 다른 소설들에서 볼 수 있던 가족 이데올로기의 특성을 내포하고 있는 작품임을 확인할 수 있다.
Family Novel has a stereotyped form in characters, conflicts and endings. not only deals with the same materials compared to other Family Novel but also has a new viewpoint. This manuscript mainly focuses on the personality of the characters and conflicts caused by them in and makes us identify the aspect which deviates the stereotype. Firstly, the main characters in the novel can be divided into a wife, concubine, husband and a stepmother. A wife is usually used as a symbol of good and a concubine as a symbol of evil. However, those characters in are not categorized between good and evil. A husband in the novel is neither a gentleman nor a playboy. Also, a stepmother who plays a crucial role in both progressing the story and resolving conflicts among characters is not a villain. Like this, a character in is not a person of distinct individuality but the one of realistic and humane traits. Secondly, we can study feud among characters and solutions to it. Characters lie in both realistic and plausible strife as wells as their personalities are not definitely classified into good or evil. Therefore, we can find a plausible way to resolve conflicts in the novel. Conflicts between characters can be settled Like a way of coexistence between a wife and a concubine or harmony between a stepmother and a child of the second wife. On the base of the entirely new characters, however, conflicts and resolution in is "Family Ideology" of the time which is mostly supported and moved by men. This is because it tends to describe women are blamed for family trouble and system of concubinage or a second wife. Through this, we can find out that is the one providing new perspectives and approaches on characters and conflicts unlike previous novels and concluding the characteristic of "Family Ideology" existing in other novels at the same time.
