의도주의의 미덕은 무엇보다도 해석적 의미의 기준을 제시한다는 것이다. 저자의 의도를 우선시하는 절대적 의도주의는 의도주의의 오류로 알려진 전통적인 비판에 직면해 왔으나, 텍스트와 맥락적 측면을 함께 고려하는 온건한 의도주의는 일반적인 직관에 부합하면서 올바른 해석을 위한 의미의 고정에 기여한다. 온건한 의도주의는 예술 작품을 발화와 유비적으로 보는 화용론적 입장에서 접근하며, 해석의 목적상 작품의 정확한 의미를 파악하는 것을 우선시한다. 온건한 의도주의에는 가설적 의도주의와 온건한 실제 의도주의가 있는데, 이 두 입장은 저자의 의도 중시, 텍스트 및 맥락, 수용자의 이해에 대한 고려 등의 일반적인 특징을 공유한다. 의미 파악이라는 해석의 이상은 가치 평가 문제와 원칙적으로 구별된다. 의도주의는 작품의 의미를 분명하게 밝혀내는 것을 우선으로 하되, 그와는 별개로 다양한 해석의 목적과 가치 평가를 인정하여 작품에 대한 이해를 넓힐 수 있도록 허용한다. 온건한 의도주의에서 이 두 목표는 양립불가능하지 않다. 다만 가설적 의도주의는 정확한 의미 파악과 가치 최대화 이상 사이의 딜레마를 보이며, 실제 의도에 대한 견해는 의도주의의 근본적 성격에 위배된다. 따라서 이 글은 의도주의의 원칙과 목적에 비추어 온건한 실제 의도주의가 더 설득력 있는 관점을 제시한다고 주장한다.
The merit of intentionalism in aesthetics is to suggest the standard for determination of work-meaning in interpretation. Intentionalism has been criticized for many problems, namely intentional fallacy. Absolute intentionalism will be vulnerable for this typical criticism, but moderate intentionalism can overcome that weakness by considering textual evidences and contextual/conventional aspects as to serve artistic interpretation relevantly. Moderate intentionalism is based on Grice`s pragmatics so that it counts artworks as utterance analogously and claims that the primary purpose of interpretation is to find the work-meaning in question. This essay discusses two typical forms of moderate intentionalism, that is, hypothetical intentionalism and moderate actual intentionalism. Those two have the points of the intention of author, textual evidence, context and convention, communication in community and audience`s understanding in common. Interpretation and artistic evaluation are quite distinct matters for purpose and moderate intentionalism puts the determination of meaning before evaluation but allows various purposes of interpretation and multiple values so that those two ideals are compatible in this theory. This essay concludes moderate actual intentionalism can be the more preferable one, for hypothetical intentionalism faces the dilemma between value-maximizing theory and actual intentionalism, and its point of view on actual intention can seem to be inappropriate for intentionalism.
