이 논문의 목적은 도덕적 경험의 기원은 정서에 있으며 그리고 기초적 도덕 경험은 하나의 신앙 경험이라는 것을 논하는 데 있다. 도덕이란 무엇인가? 그리고 도덕적 경험의 기초는 무엇인가? 이 질문은 윤리학에서 가장 기본적이면서도 또한 가장 소홀히 취급되는 물음이다. 이 질문에 대해 만족할 만한 답을 내어놓을 수 없다면, 모든 도덕적 범주는 무너지게 된다. 이 논문은 위의 두 질문 가운데 뒤의 것에 초점을 맞춘다. 도덕의 자리는 마음이다. 도덕은 정서에서 뿌리내리고 자란다. 기초적인 도덕적 경험은 가치에 대한 정서적 반응이다. 그것은 근본적으로 형이상학적 경험도 아니고 종교적 경험도 아니다. 기초적 도덕 경험은 하나의 신앙경험이다. 신앙은 규범적이고 근본적인 앎의 방식이다. 삶은 정서에다 그 원천을 가지는 지식의 일종인 신앙 지식으로 가득 차 있다. 신앙은 해석적, 정서적 앎의 활동이다. 도덕과 종교는 서로 의지하고, 중요한 도움을 주고받는다. 그래서 도덕과 종교는 상호 배척이 아니라 상호 보완 관계이다.

My purpose here is to urge that the origins of moral experience are in the affections and the foundational moral experience is a faith experience. The most fundamental and most neglected questions in ethical inquiry: What is morality? and What is the foundation of moral experience? If we cannot answer those to related questions with any satisfaction, then all moral categories are evacuated. It is in the heart that morality has its birth. It is in feeling that its roots are found and nourished. The foundational moral experience is an affective reaction to value. It is not a metaphysical or a religious experience primordially. And the foundational moral experience is a faith experience. faith is a normal and basic way of knowing. Life is full of faith-knowledge, a kind of knowledge that has its source in affectivity. faith is an interpretive, affective, knowing act. Morality and religion must rely on each other. Morality and religion are important to give help to each other. And they are important to give help to each other. Therefore, morality and religion are complementary rather than mutual exclusion.
