According to Lawrence, modern man suffers from a negative death or the death without vitality. He asserts that it is caused by the static ego, its will-to-persist that neutralizes both life and death. He thinks that he should play the role to break open the static ego and make it accept the process of change through the Holy Ghost. Lawrence`s metaphor of the Holy Ghost, the life energy that flows through all living creatures, including living ideas, driving them through a series of patterns embodying life and death and rebirth-the formation of a new pattern. He thinks that the balanced and organic relationship between man and non-human is the best way for modern men to recover their wholeness. Lawrence focuses on the opening-up of communications between the human and the non-human, the self and the not-self, the conscious and the unconscious. His poems based on his unique insight to life, is individualistic and distinctly Lawrentian, both in subject and style. Lawrence convinces that it is life`s experience themselves that creates their own artistic forms. His poetry of the present is the by-product of his experiences. (Namseoul University)
